Italian tourist skydiving in NZ hits the ground at terminal velocity
Antonino Arillotta, 38, hit the ground at speeds of greater than 120MPH and was most probably killed instantly when both his main and reserve parachutes failed to open on a skydiving flight Thursday afternoon, local police said.
The victim, who had been in New Zealand only a few weeks, was filming a commercial tandem jump in Wanaka when his NZ death clock stopped ticking.
Mr Arillotta was an experienced skydiver who had carried out almost 4000 jumps, according to a report.
On average, 3 foreigners are killed in New Zealand every 4 days.
The Italian tourist was probably the 2,594th visitor killed in New Zealand since January 2000.
