“Rising violent crime has made more than two-thirds of Christchurch women more fearful for their safety than they were five years ago, a new study of attitudes toward crime shows.
“With violent crime rates increasing in the city and several recent high-profile cases in which women were victimized, 71 per cent of women said they felt less safe than they did in 2003.
“The study, commissioned by The Press for its Eye on Crime series which starts today, paints a picture of people living in fear of crime that is perceived as growing in seriousness and volume. …
“Of female respondents, 38 per cent said they felt ‘a lot less safe’ and 33 per cent said they felt “a little less safe” than they did in 2003. The rest said they felt about the same as they did five years ago, while none said they felt safer. …
“‘There is a perception of people being frightened for their own personal safety. We’ve had women in their 50s, confident businesswomen, who would not go into town on their own at night. There is a real awareness of street violence out there.'”
“Herbert said there was ‘quite a marked increase’ in the severity of violence towards women.”
Unfortunately, the report “weaselwords” its way through statistics and stops short of providing detailed analysis of the level of violence in New Zealand and the crimes which are mostly committed against foreign visitors, Asians and other minorities. Further, the report limits its “findings” to Christchurch and leaves out other major violent cities like Auckland and Wellington.

Daylight sexual-assault at knife-point in Lower Hutt ‘brazen’
Police have been scouring the scene of a sexual assault in Lower Hutt on Friday after a woman was attacked in daylight.
The attack about 1pm on Thursday was a particularly nasty one, Detective Sergeant Nick Pritchard of Hutt Valley CIB said.
“It was very brazen,” he said.
“The victim was taken by surprise, she did not see the person until he was very close to her, was held at knifepoint, dragged into the bushes, and sexually and physically assaulted.”
The attack happened as a woman in her early 30s went for a lunchtime walk.
The victim works in the area, knew the area well, and often went for walks at lunch, Pritchard said.
On Thursday she was walking on a path on the eastern side of the Hutt River, approximately 500 metres north of the Melling Bridge, when she was attacked.
What made it particularly chilling was that the attacker made his move in broad daylight in a busy area, police said.
“This was an attack carried out in the middle of the day in a popular area, so it could not be foreseen,” Pritchard said.
During the attack, the victim was also kicked in the head and stomped on, sustaining facial and other injuries.
Afterwards the man left the woman and fled the scene.
She had undergone a medical examination and treatment, and was recovering at home.
Police were appealing to the public to come forward with any information about the attacker, who is described as being a man of slim to average build, with light brown skin, aged in his 20s.
He was wearing a dark-coloured long sleeve top, knee-length shorts, a hat and also gloves, possibly fingerless.
Some people had already contacted police with information matching the person of interest, Pritchard said.
Twelve officers were working on the case, door-knocking in the area, assessing the scene of the crime, conducting ongoing interviews with the victim and trawling through CCTV footage.
“It’s still early days but as the investigation progresses I’m certain we will identify a person of interest,” Pritchard said.

8-year-old treated for melanoma
A child as young as 8 and others in their teens have been treated in Tauranga for melanoma, health professionals say.
Twenty-five people die of the skin cancer in the Bay of Plenty every year according to the latest figures from the Cancer Society.
However, parents spoken to by the Bay of Plenty Times Weekend reported while sunscreen was an essential item to protect their children against skin cancer, the cost could be an issue and some health professionals are calling for a government subsidy.
Dr Franz Strydom, founder of the Skinspots Skin Cancer Clinic in Mount Maunganui, said he had treated a 15-year-old at his clinic for melanoma but “the youngest person with a melanoma I know of in Tauranga was an 8-year-old”.
The Ministry of Health did not respond to questions about the possibility of subsidising sunscreen but a spokesman said its most recent data showed in the Bay of Plenty DHB region there were 144 registrations for malignant melanoma of the skin in 2011, and 166 in 2012.
Between 1999 and 2012, the youngest registration for a malignant melanoma of the skin in the Bay of Plenty District Health Board area was in the 10-14 years age group, she said.
