Weather wreaks havoc in New Zealand

A “weather bomb” lashed the North Island Friday night damaging buildings, uprooting trees and cutting power to thousands of homes.

A weather forecaster described it as  a “pretty rough 24 hours, especially up north. At about 3am or 4am in Whangarei it was incredibly stormy.”

“Wind and rain began on Friday night and continued for much of yesterday, felling trees and lifting tarpaulins off homes in Kaitaia damaged by a tornado two weeks ago.”  According to a report.

“Four boatsheds at Northland’s Kissing Point were badly damaged by high winds early yesterday.”

Gisborne area was flooded by heavy rain and a massive landslide near Tolaga Bay made things worse.

Christchurch Airport was struck by an eerie fog which brought it to a standstill Saturday, with many flights delayed or diverted to Auckland.

At least two dozen accidents in Auckland were blamed on the weather.
