Competition: Find an Appropriate Name for This Ship

Navy’s newest ship: OTAGO

The Navy’s newest ship, Otago, finally crosses the Tasman this weekend, two years after it was finished [it was tied up at a Melbourne wharf, instead of breaking wind on the high seas.]

The offshore patrol vessel (OPV), (in New Zealand we also have in-shore patrol vessels (IPV) class, and soon one “onshore” vessel would be added, too), one of Project Protector group, had been caught in a dispute with Australian shipbuilder BAE Systems.  Otago is sailing for Devonport on Sunday, and its skipper, Lieutenant Commander Simon Rooke, will bring the boat into Devonport next Friday.

“It is an incredible feeling to be hours away from sailing from Melbourne to sail Otago home,” he said.

“The entire ship is a hive of activity, and excitement, as we make our final preparations to sail.”

The Offshore Patrol Vessels  can go further offshore, “stay at sea longer, and conduct more challenging operations than the Inshore Patrol Vessels, and will enable the RNZN to conduct patrol and surveillance operations around New Zealand, the southern ocean and into the Pacific.”  Stuff NZ said.

Readers are invited to find an appropriate name for Otago.

Flag burning incident in Parliament’s grounds

The Parliamentary Service can confirm that two people staging an unauthorised protest on the grounds of Parliament at 1307 today set fire to a New Zealand flag which had been doused with an accelerant.

Parliament Security has advised Police are in the process of investigating the incident.

“The protest also included presenting photos of Prime Minister John Key, ACT leader Rodney Hide and former Prime Minister Helen Clark and cutting their heads off.” NZPA said.

NZ Toilet Spying: From Ridiculous to Profane!

New Zealand: A police state fit for sheeple!

It seems like the kiwi interpretation of “democracy” is elevated to “whatever our appointed PM says, goes!”

The lamb-like kiwi is a coward. They are so frightened of consequences of disobeying fascist rule, they would welcome a police state rather than freedom from oppression.

The following is a Press Release by New Zealand Green Party:

Spy agencies become only area of Government growth

The transformation of the External Assessments Bureau into the National Assessments Bureau should not have occurred without proper consultation, said Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson Keith Locke.

It has just been revealed that the Government has shifted the attention of the External Assessments Bureau onto domestic issues due, in part, to the upcoming Rugby World Cup.

“It is treating Parliament and the public with contempt not to engage in consultation before transforming the External Assessments Bureau,” said Mr Locke.

“The External Assessments Bureau has been dedicated to foreign country assessments, and now the Government is transforming it into into a domestic spy agency.

“There has been no demonstration of why the two existing intelligence agencies concerned with domestic intelligence, the Police and the Security Intelligence Service are not covering the field adequately.

“Presumably the goal is to beef up domestic security, but the new NAB might just confuse the picture as it tries to take over some of the tasks now performed by Police intelligence or the SIS.

“We are regularly told times are tough and all Government agencies must tighten their belts,” said Mr Locke.

“It is a bit sad when the only growth area in the public service is in the spy agencies, who are quite unaccountable to the general public.”
