At least 67 percent of crime in New Zealand goes unreported: Survey

The following are excerpts reprinted from a report by The Dominion Post

Only a third of crime in New Zealand is reported, according to a survey.

About a quarter of 6,000 respondents surveyed, said they felt the police could not or would not deal with it.

“Sexual crimes were the least likely to be reported, often because the victim was ashamed or embarrassed.”

[See also: 91 percent of the rapes either go unreported, or the victims are intimidated by the police to drop complaints.]

At least 2.6 million offences were cited in the 2009 New Zealand Crime and Safety Survey.

[NOTE: Population of New Zealand is 4,391,856 according to the govt stats office.]

About 56 percent of New Zealand adults said they felt “worried about being in a traffic accident caused by a drunk driver, being burgled, having their car deliberately damaged or broken into, and having their credit cards misused.”
