Magnitude 5.5 shook the East Coast earlier today
The earthquake was was centered about 30km south west of Ruatoria and was 70km deep, GNS Science said.
The quake hit at 12.42pm and would have been felt in the Gisborne and Bay of Plenty regions, Geonet said.
Gisborne resident described her fright:
“It shook for quite a while. I was thinking ‘oh is this going to be the beginning of a big one?’ because it was a quick sort of shake and then it settled down into a rock from side to side kind of movement.”

This quake followed a magnitude 4.1 which hit 30 km south of Whakatane at a depth of 60 km last night.
