Saturday, 21 November 2015 – 8:56pm

Tasman Police said:

“It is believed two [of the helicopter crash victims] were Australians and four were from the United Kingdom. Formal identification of those people will take some time”. http://www.police.govt.nz/news/release/fox-glacier-victims-nationalities

“The helicopter that crashed is believed to be a Eurocopter “Squirrel” operated by local firm Alpine Adventures,” according to a report.

The police have not said how long the tourists had stayed alive in New Zealand before the fatal crash. An English tourist who had survived an Australian holiday, was “road-murdered” in a two-car collision within 1o hours of arriving in New Zealand, about two weeks  ago.

Other details of the crash:

  • The helicopter crashed in a crevasse 2500ft (762m) up the valley and debris was scattered hundreds of metres around the crash site, said Inspector John Canning, adding that the recovery would be very difficult in the dangerous terrain..
  • The company involved is reportedly “Alpine Adventures”.
  • The chopper took off despite bad weather. “Weather conditions were poor at Fox Glacier at the time of the crash.”
  • St John was alerted to the crash at 11.05am on Saturday.
