American beggars in Christchurch told to move by police

Posted by te2ataria on January 20, 2016

More tourists are robbed, mugged, raped, killed in New Zealand than in all other OECD countries combined

American tourists who say everything was stolen from their camper van have taken to begging on the streets of Christchurch.

Since December, a man and woman who say they are American tourists, have been begging on Colombo St in Christchurch armed with “a piece of cardboard sign held down by two water bottles.” The sign reads: “American tourists everything stolen from campervan”.

German holiday worker seriously injured in NZ meat plant incident

Posted by te2ataria on January 19, 2016

möchten Sie in Neuseeland arbeiten?

Nein Danke!

Greedy, unscrupulous and right-down-evil employers prey on young European holiday workers, too!

Previously: Thai Workers Complain of Exploitation in New Zealand

Labour Department bosses have stopped a horticultural contractor from recruiting more foreign workers, after eight Thais complained of exploitation.

Applications from Havenleigh Global Services to employ further international workers have been suspended “until further notice”, department spokesman Steve Cantlon said.  It follows a complaint from a group of Thais who claimed they had been ripped off by Thailand-based recruitment agents and Havenleigh.

The Thais said they paid agency fees of up to NZ$14,000 each on the false promise of lucrative jobs and believed Havenleigh underpaid them for working 60- to 70-hour, seven-day weeks, including public holidays. http://www.humantrafficking.org/updates/675

Today, the employers are readily putting “young visitors into unnecessarily dangerous work situations.”

German holiday worker knocked out in meat plant incident at Rangiuru

A young German holiday worker was screaming in agony after getting caught on a meat spreader at the Rangiuru Affco Talley plant, before losing consciousnesses, according to a report. http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/farming/agribusiness/75989861/german-holiday-worker-knocked-out-in-meat-plant-accident-at-rangiuru.html

The incident on Friday has left the union questioning why inexperienced and temporary workers are doing such dangerous jobs.

The man was knocked out and left with cuts to his face and head, as well as damaged teeth, when the incident occurred on the mutton slaughter chain.

The New Zealand Meat Workers Union organising director Darien Fenton said the man was put into one of the most dangerous parts of the freezing works after only  a few weeks of employment training.

“New Zealand has young people coming in on holiday visas and they need to ensure they’re safe,” Fenton said.

“I don’t believe the job that young guy was required to do was safe.

“I don’t know what training he had, but if he was only there two weeks it wasn’t enough and he shouldn’t have been doing that job.”

He was employed on December 9, 2015 and after only “one to two hours of induction to the company, one to two hours of department induction and up to a week of working with a buddy.”

The company said he was competent for the job!

But Fenton said the incident should raise a red flag about the practices of employers putting young visitors into unnecessarily dangerous work situations.

Two fire engines and three ambulances attended the scene at about 1.45pm and the man was taken to Tauranga Hospital where he was discharged later that night.

But the incident is not an isolated case.

In August 2014, at the same plant “another employee was impaled through the head by a 10cm meat hook that emerged under his eye.”

A WorkSafe spokesperson said at the time that one charge had been laid against Affco New Zealand Limited under the Health and Safety in Employment Act.

“The charge is that Affco, being an employer, failed to take all practicable steps to ensure that its employee [Jason Matahiki, 43] was not exposed to the hazard of the moving ‘fore leg chain’, while at work.”

The outcome of that case could be released in February, Fenton said.

“He was badly damaged, and has bad dreams every night about what happened to him. Seeing this happen again has just been devastating for him.”

Fenton said the chain was a fast moving environment with knives and mechanical equipment and put stress on workers to keep up with processing.

She said it was too easy for workers to make mistakes if they thought they were falling behind and there were serious consequences if there was an accident.

“This is the second serious harm accident in the same area at Rangiuru in the last two years. “Most holiday visa workers in the meat industry are employed in basic jobs where their safety cannot be compromised.”

General manager for Affco Andy Leonard said approximately 20 staff were on working holiday visas and the injured man was fully inducted and trained for the task he was completing.

“Worksafe were advised [of the incident] and we liaised with them on the telephone and they gave us the go-ahead that we could continue working once they were satisfied with the information we had gathered from the scene,” he said.

Unsurprisingly, Leonard did not comment on “what, if any, additional health and safety features have been implemented since the 2014 incident.”

“I’m quite new [to the company] so I can’t really answer that and I’d rather not comment on that because we are waiting for a response from the courts.” http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/farming/agribusiness/75989861/german-holiday-worker-knocked-out-in-meat-plant-accident-at-rangiuru.html

Life made to be so worthless and trivial in “God’s Own Country”

Posted by te2ataria on January 16, 2016

New Zealand’s Death Sheet 2015  (population: 4,596,700)

Note: nearly all of the following figures released by government agencies have been doctored to make the country look “normal”, or just like any other country.

Provisional 2015 road toll as doctored by the authorities: 320 (actual figure: many, many more deaths)

Suicide figures: 2013 data

In 2013, a total of 508 people (365 males and 143 females) committed suicide in New Zealand. This equates to an age-standardised rate of 11.0 deaths per 100,000 population.  http://www.health.govt.nz/publication/suicide-facts-2013-data  (Blog estimate: at least 900 deaths)

Drowning deaths: 100 (actual figure: probably as many as 180 deaths)

No. of people killed by trains: About three or four peopleper week?

Work related incidents:

Recently released figures show in the past financial year WorkSafe began 724 investigations and, at any one time, between 270 and 280 in progress. http://www.business.govt.nz/worksafe/about/publications/documents/annual-report-2014-2015.pdf/

It is estimated that 600 to 900 people die prematurely each year from diseases caused by longterm workplace exposures. Asbestos is a big contributor; fatality estimates vary from 170 to 300 people per year. (Blog fatality estimate: 1,800 to 2,200)

NZ has the highest rates of cancer deaths in the world (with melanoma included)

Cancer is the country’s single biggest cause of death. Most New Zealanders will have some experience of it – either personally or through a relative or friend. http://www.health.govt.nz/your-health/conditions-and-treatments/diseases-and-illnesses/cancer

At least 22,000 cases of cancer were recorded in New Zealand last year, according to Cancer Society. https://cancernz.org.nz/

(Actual figures? Ask around. You’d be horrified/shocked/surprised to learn the truth. Also, the number of visitors who developed melanoma as a result of staying in New Zealand is NOT known.)

Bowel cancer, also called colon, rectal or colorectal cancer, is the second highest cause of cancer death in New Zealand. In 2011, at least 3,030 people were diagnosed with bowel cancer and 1,191 died from the disease. (Blog estimate: 1,500 – 1,700 deaths.)

Breast cancer is New Zealand’s third most common cancer and accounts for more than 600 deaths every year. (Blog estimate: 900 – 1,200 deaths.)

In New Zealand, about 160 women develop cervical cancer each year – and about 50 die from it. (Blog estimate: 300 – 350 deaths)

Lung cancer is the biggest cause of cancer deaths in New Zealand. It has low survival rates; just 10 per cent of people diagnosed with lung cancer survive beyond five years of diagnosis.

Around 5,000 people die each year in New Zealand because of smoking or second-hand smoke exposure.  http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/snapshots-of-nz/nz-social-indicators/Home/Health/tobacco-smoking.aspx

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in New Zealand. In 2011, a total of 3,023 new cases of prostate cancer were found, and 585 men died from the disease.  (Blog estimate: 1,600 – 1,900 deaths.)

Blog estimates are based on figures provided by WHO as well as several other sources.

There were 1,475 fewer births and 1,495 more deaths compared with 2013. http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/population/births/BirthsAndDeaths_HOTPYeDec14.aspx

As for the God’s Own Country, it is a phrase first used to describe the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland and has since been repeatedly abused to refer to many other places from Australia to United States, including Kerala state (India), Cornwall, Surrey, Yorkshire (England), Scotland, Wales and of course New Zealand. The phrase has been abbreviated to Godzone and sometimes Godzown.

Missing father-of-three found dead in Whanganui
Whanganui man David Hill has been found dead, after he went missing for almost two weeks.

Mr Hill leaves behind a widow and three children aged 10, six and one.

Police said he was found “within the Whanganui area” but would not say where, and also refused to comment on the circumstances in which he was found, although they said it was not suspicious.

Search parties and helicopters for aerial searches were privately funded by Mr Hill’s family to work alongside police.

Senior Sergeant Lance Kennedy, of Whanganui, said nobody else was being sought in relation to the matter. [And that just about wraps it up!]

Kids huffing fly spray set car on fire

Four children injured in a car fire in Huntly were huffing fly spray when one ignited a lighter, police said.

Three children aged 15, 13 and 12, and one of unknown age, were taken to Waikato Hospital after the blaze in Huntly on Wednesday night.

Two boys and one girl were seriously injured, one of them undergoing surgery for facial burns, and another had moderate burns.

“I believe four youths – male and female – were huffing fly spray in the car and then it has exploded,” police said.

“Not sure if one of them thought it was a good idea to have a cigarette while huffing – I don’t know yet.”

In 2014, three teenagers were seriously injured in Auckland – one was set on fire – when a room they were huffing in exploded.  http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/75876499/kids-huffing-fly-spray-when-car-goes-up-in-flames–police

Former police officer charged with accessing a police staffer’s Facebook account

A former Wellington police officer has appeared in court, accused of illegally accessing a Facebook account that did not belong to him.

Legal experts say the prosecution is unusual, with one pointing out that police access people’s Facebook accounts “all the time”, through technology used to fight cyber crime.

Ex-police officer Simon Lindroos appeared in the Wellington District Court on December 22 on a charge of accessing the Facebook account of another police staff member, communications adviser Melissa Weddell, by deception.

Lindross, 30, was charged under the 1961 Crimes Act, as the alleged offence was committed on August 1, three months before the enactment of the new Harmful Digital Communications Act.

The offence is punishable with a maximum of three years in prison.

THE CHARGE

Simon Lindroos is charged with having “directly accessed a computer system, namely the private Facebook account of Melissa Weddell and thereby by deception and without claim of right obtained benefit, namely access, to the private account of Melissa Weddell”. http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/wellington/75787426/Former-policeman-charged-with-accessing-Facebook-account-by-deception
