Rape victim seeks Government compensation

A 45-year-old woman, who was among several girls raped or indecently assaulted by a social worker 30 years ago is to seek compensation from the Government over its handling of the case.

She had alerted staff at the Girls’ Home in Elliot St, Dunedin, that she had been sexually abused by Edward Anand in 1986, and claims the authorities effectively allowed him to continue offending.

“They had an opportunity to resolve this back in 1986, but chose to sweep it under the carpet,” the victim said.

“I’m 99 per cent sure there are other victims out there. I don’t think it’s fair.”

“Two women who were abused by Anand received $25,000 compensation each from the Ministry of Social Development several years ago,” according to a report.

i was one of the women compensated ..msd was pathetic in the way they dealt with me..they even put the payout into someone elses bank account..thank goodness that person was honest with me and gave me it…msd then flew from wellington to Invercargill to bully me into signing that I had received it..from what I have heard of other victims they are being bullied into to receiving lesser amounts..msd does not care about the victims..its all pay them as little as possible and make them go away..shut up money for a life half lived through the lack of care in Dunedin girls home

The victims deserved to be treated with respect and dignity. What happened in Dunedin girls home and how the government handled it were totally unacceptable.
And then we learn victims were being bullied into receiving the least amounts of shut up money.
