An American pit bull terrier-cross has been euthanised after attacking a 2-year-old boy in Woolston, Christchurch.

The dog was believed to be a 2-year-old male American pit bull terrier-cross. He has since been euthanised.

The attack happened just a day before 7-year-old Darnell Mikaere Minarapa-Brown was mauled by his uncle’s pit bull terrier in Auckland, and just one day after the 72-year-old Christchurch woman was attacked by as she cycled to her Burnside home.

The number of dog bite claims to ACC has jumped 22 per cent since 2006, to 12,000 in 2015, while the cost of such claims has more than doubled during that time, from $2 million in 2006 to $4.5m last year.

Seven-year-old Darnell Mikaere Minarapa-Brown was rushed to hospital with facial wounds on Saturday after a dog attacked him at a Takanini, South Auckland property.

Manurewa-Papakura ward councillor Calum Penrose says the attack is the fourth in as many weeks in his ward where a child aged between three and 12 has been the victim.

More than 99,000 dog bites were reported to ACC between 2004 and 2014 – an average of two a day. At least 5842 of those cases required hospitalisation, and over a third of those were children who had suffered facial injuries.

Is that the “Zulian Calendar,” with 495 days in the year?
