Magma chamber causing earthquakes

“Scientists have found a startling reason for the thousands of quakes that have swarmed around a tiny eastern Bay of Plenty settlement over recent years – a huge magma chamber lying just a few kilometres beneath it.” http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11650441

Thousand earthquakes had occurred the town of Matata between 2004 and 2011, and a 20km-square area of land around the town has been pushed up by about 40cm since 1950.

“Using a model based on modern GPS and satellite radar data, along with decades of survey records, scientists have concluded a magma body lies about 9km below the surface – and since 1950 its volume had grown by the equivalent of 80,000 Olympic swimming pools.” [Volume of an Olympic swimming pool is 2,500 cubic meters.]

GNS Science employees insist the presence of such enormous amount of magma does not mean an eruption could be imminent, nor had it changed the volcanic hazard of the Bay of Plenty region.

[However, they have failed to explain what might happen if the rate of inflation increases, or the uplift continues even at its current rate, an informed source has noted.]

“Our modelling points to the presence of a magma chamber in an area where there has been no active volcanism for about 400,000 years,” said GNS Science satellite image specialist Dr Ian Hamling.

OK! But what’s the significance of the sizeable ground uplift in recent years?

What are the probabilities of a catastrophic eruption in the Bay of Plenty region in the next 1,000 years, 100 years, 10 years, or indeed 100 days?

We have the right to know. If GNS Science people don’t have the answer, they should come clean and say so now.

Emergency surgery after boy attacked by four dogs in Gisborne

Posted by te2ataria on June 4, 2016

Foreword: IF you want to know how intelligent we Kiwis are, read about the daily carnage on our roads [even though the government limits the reported road toll to about 300 per year,] or count the number of daily dog attacks [until the government bans reporting those, too!]

Another dog attack: Boy, 5, torn to pieces by four vicious dogs

A 5-year-old boy has undergone emergency surgery in Gisborne Hospital this afternoon after he was attacked by four dogs, said to be American staffordshire bull terrier cross

“The boy had just been dropped off at the house by a family member and was entering the gate on the front deck when the four dogs burst on to the deck and attacked him,” police said.

The boy suffered multiple bite wounds and St John ambulance staff who tended to him said he was “status two”,  which indicates serious injuries.  http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11650734
