“We have normalised child poverty as a society – that a certain level of need in a certain part of the population is somehow OK,” says Vivien Maidaborn, executive director of Unicef New Zealand.
“The empathy Kiwis are famous for has hardened. Over the last 20 years we have increasingly blamed the people needing help for the problem.
“If you can’t afford your children to have breakfast, you’re a bad budgeter. If you aren’t working you’re lazy. But our subconscious beliefs about some people ‘deserving’ poverty because of poor life choices no longer apply in today’s environment. We have to ask ourselves as a society, are we really prepared to let our children grow up this way?”
For a third of New Zealand children the Kiwi dream of home ownership, stable employment and education is just that – a dream.
For poor children in the developed South Pacific nation of 4.5 million illnesses associated with chronic poverty are common, including developing world rates of rheumatic fever (virtually unknown by doctors in comparable countries such as Canada and the UK), and respiratory illnesses.
Meals are irregular and nutritionally poor, consisting of meat pies, hot chips and 99c white bread. School attendance may be patchy or skipped entirely, and protective clothing and footwear for the harsh New Zealand climate is a luxury.
Unicef’s definition of child poverty in New Zealand: Children living in households who earn less than 60% of the median national income – NZ$28,000 a year, or NZ$550 a week.

First Auckland and now Taupo
Rental shortage in the tourist town of Taupo [district pop: 36,000] has caused a homeless situation for many residents, “in extreme cases forcing some to live in hotels, cars and even on the streets.”
Taupo has experienced an influx of Aucklanders buying here to escape the skyrocketing Auckland prices, said Mayor David Trewavas. As a result housing prices have doubled up and there’s an acute shortage in rental properties, he said.
Auckland is growing by a record 825 people a week, two thirds of whom are new migrants, says Labour MP Phil Goff, who represents the other side of the government mint.
Auckland needs at least 17,000 new houses a year and last year the council consented only 9,500 units, he said.
Meanwhile, the issuing of temporary work visas continued at over 209,000 a year, with a net gain of more than 63,000 long term migrants in the year to July 2016.

[But don’t blame it all on processed food. There are several other powerful underlying factors at play in New Zealand that the Canadian professor is clearly unaware of, or unwilling to admit. Moderator B.]
The surprisingly dramatic role of nutrition in mental health | Julia Rucklidge | TEDx Christchurch
Processed foods with little nutritional value are making us sick and driving us mad, according to new research.
“Despite the advent of medications and other therapies over the last 50 years, the rates of mental illness have been on the rise rather than a decline. Over the last decade, scientists have been uncovering an uncomfortable truth: What we eat is affecting our mental health”, says Professor of Clinical Psychology Julia Rucklidge, who moved from Toronto to the University of Canterbury.
Rucklidge conducted a random controlled trial of adults with ADHD “which found that 64 per cent of those who received extra vitamins and minerals showed significantly fewer ADHD symptoms after eight weeks, compared with 37 per cent of those who received an inactive placebo”, says a report.
More remarkable was a study involving 91 Christchurch residents with high stress levels immediately after the February 2011 earthquake.
“Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder dropped from 65 per cent to 19 per cent among those who received extra vitamins and minerals, compared with a slight increase from 44 per cent to 48 per cent of a control group that did not get the supplements,” says the report.
“A lot of the food that may be given out is not food that is actually going to nourish the individual and sustain them in order to get through this,” she said.
“Our diet has changed so rapidly over 50 years that it’s hard not to believe that it’s having some impact on our mental health,” she said.
“My work shows that, because we show an impact of using vitamins and minerals on mental health, it simply proves the point that the diet these people are eating is simply not adequately meeting their nutritional needs.”
In contrast, the number of patients on Pharmac-funded antidepressants has risen from 8.4 per cent of all adults in 2006 to 12.7 per cent in 2015.

A Czech male in his late 20s was killed from a fall on July 28, his female companion has told police.
The Czech woman made help signs in the snow during in a remote Routeburn Track hut.
“The woman told police her partner fell down a steep slope on July 28 – four days after starting the 32-kilometre tramp from the Glenorchy end. She managed to reach him but he died soon after.”
It took the woman, in her early 30s, three days to walk the two kilometres from where her partner died to the Lake Mackenzie Hut, in Fiordland amid “extreme conditions”.

New Zealanders and South Sudanese migrants to Australia feel they are more discriminated against among all migrant groups, according to a survey of more than 10,000 people.
Migrants feel less optimistic the longer they stay in Australia, the report has found.
“New Zealanders who come here can come by their passport, but the consequence of that is there are some benefits that they don’t get,” said Professor Markus of Monash University.
Professor Andrew Markus said many New Zealanders, who hold Special Category Visas, feel they are given a “harsh deal” in Australia because they can live and work here but are not eligible to vote, receive welfare, or other benefits.
“At one level they should know what they’re getting themselves into because it’s very clearly explained to them,” he said.
“Nonetheless people feel resentment having worked in this country for years, paid their taxes, contributed to the community and then having difficulties and not being able to get Centrelink benefits. [See Australians Today report.]
“They also resent the fact that an Australian going to New Zealand does qualify for full citizenship but if you come the other way, you don’t.”
More than 200,000 New Zealanders on these visas, can’t get any help from Centrelink, it’s hard for kids going to university to get HECS, and they don’t get to vote, says the report.
“Both New Zealand and South Sudanese migrants also reported low levels of trust, with Kiwis holding a very little trust in political parties (10 per cent) and the South Sudanese reporting the lowest level of trust in the police (24 per cent) out of any other group.”
“Migrants from South Sudan bear the brunt of discrimination, with the report’s author Professor Andrew Markus describing the level of colour prejudice towards them as ‘off the scale'”.

“The fact that there are more suicides in New Zealand than deaths from drowning and car crashes combined means our fire brigade are more likely to attend a suicide than a motor vehicle accident,” said Runanga fire chief Gavin Gibbens has attended five suspected suicides in the last 18 months..
[The fire chief is clearly unaware that the stats for both the road fatalities and drownings in New Zealand are heavily manipulated. But, point taken Chief! –Moderator]
Greymouth woman Tracy Stark, who has set up an online support group and launched a petition calling for wider reporting on suicide deaths in the media, said she knew of nine people who have died as a result of suicide since Christmas. They were either her friends or her children’s friends, she said.
Stark said she had witnessed the “devastating effect” of suicides, often exacerbated by the subject being taboo.
“I know mums who have been hushed up from speaking to the media,” she said.
She complained about the West Coast lacking sufficient mental health, substance abuse and anger management services.
“It’s an epidemic. I’m sick of suicides. I’m sick of burying people,” she said.
The “silent killer” was partly as a result of lack of jobs on the West Coast, said Chief Gibbens.
“Alcohol and drugs exacerbates the situation . . . loss of identity in the town, relationships breaking down because of financial or drug and alcohol issues or violence,” he said.
“It’s a taboo thing to talk about but I am hoping we will put together a pamphlet about suicide awareness,” he added.
He was aware of at least 12 suspected suicides on the West Coast in the past year.
“We have a population of 30,000-odd. Nationally the figures are one in 10,000, well we have four times the national average.”
In 2015, some 569 deaths [a fraction of the actual total] were ruled as a suicide or suspected suicide in New Zealand.
How one mum has been stopped from talking about her son’s suicide
The mother, a Christchurch resident, lost her son on November 24, 2013. He was 18 years and nine months old.
“As the anniversary of his death approached, she wanted to celebrate him. She spoke to a reporter, but then, a coroner suppressed the details around her son’s death.
“The family can not be identified because as part of the suppression ruling, her son’s name may not be associated with the mention of suicide.”

Small number of people hit by Havelock North campylobacter outbreak could develop a serious neurological condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome, says Professor Michael Baker, a leading public health academic of the department of public health at Otago University.
“Guillain-Barre Syndrome, or GBS, sees the body’s immune system attack nerves that control movement and feeling. It develops one to two weeks after a campylobacter infection,” said a report.
“Test results this afternoon for the Hastings town supply produced positive results for E. coli bacteria. E. coli can be an indicator of faecal contamination and can cause gastric illness.
“Hastings’ water, supplied from an underground aquifer, is quite separate from the Havelock North town supply which was found to have been contaminated with campylobacter and led to more than 4000 people falling ill with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, headaches and muscle pain,” according to a report.
Exposure to Toxic Poisoning in New Zealand Lakes and Waterways
New Zealand’s intensive animal industries produce about 4 times more manure than could safely be used as fertilizer, said a report.
New Zealand farmers used a total of 820,000 tons of fertilizers to their croplands in 1999 (204 kg/ha of cropland each year, about twice as much as the U.S. and 220 percent of the world average). New Zealand also uses about twice as much pesticides per hectare of cropland (2,215 kg/ha, 1996 data – more recent data not available.) than the U.S.
“South Canterbury’s high rate of gastro illness is attributed to the high number of people in physical contact with farm animals either through work or on lifestyle blocks”, said a report.
The statistics (based on per 100,000 population) show 250 cases of campylobacteriosis for South Canterbury (compared to 180 nationally), 28 cryptosporidiosis (compared to 18 nationally), and 50 salmonellosis (compared to 22 nationally)

Jeffrey Antony Wright, 36, who was working as manager of a large dairy farm at Queens Flat in North Otago, says he was under “a huge amount of stress” and unable to control his frustrations with his herd.
He decided to punish the four-legged creatures by breaking their tails!
A vet who examined the tails of all 1,065 cows on the dairy farm “found several cows with broken tails, including eight that had been fractured in the past fortnight – three of which had compound fractures with either bone protruding through the skin or the skin having been ruptured at the fracture”, said a report.
“The level of pain from a broken tail is equivalent to having a person’s fingers broken and interferes with the animal mating, defecation and swatting flies. It is an injury that requires veterinary care”, according to an official report.
“The level of pain from a broken tail is equivalent to having a person’s fingers broken and interferes with the animal mating, defecation and swatting flies. It is an injury that requires veterinary care”.
Wright has admitted to wilfully ill-treating eight dairy cows by breaking their tails and recklessly ill-treating 40 more cows by breaking their tails.
The cruel and sadistic farmer was not a “cruel or sadistic man”, says Zombie Judge
Judge Tom Gilbert said the wilful ill-treatment charge was very serious. It carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail or a fine up to $100,000. However, because the [cruel or sadistic] farmer was not a “cruel or sadistic man”, he would probably sentence him to home detention in November.
“Can you live with your mum [without breaking her tail?]” Judge Gilbert asked Wright.
“It’d be better than jail time, for sure,” he replied.

The fact that there are 12 times as many murders per capita in Auckland than in Tokyo, did not bother the report authors.
