Thousands of litres of hazardous waste spilled at a Fonterra plant in Southland on Tuesday morning. Staff at the Edendale factory reported 5000-litre tanks of nitric acid and caustic alkali were overflowing.

Chemical spill in Motueka
Toxic hydrogen cyanamide (Hi-Cane) has leaked from a barrel on the back of a truck and onto the road in Motueka, police said.
[Hi-Cane is a plant growth regulator which promotes uniform budbreak and flowering of kiwifruit, and earlier concentrated flowering of apples. It’s a toxic chemical and can be fatal if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. ]
Waikato Police (!) looking to locate missing kayaker
At about 5.00pm today, police were alerted to a man yelling for help while floating down the Waikato River on a blue and white kayak. Christchurch fatal crash: Canterbury Police (!) have released name of the woman who was killed in a crash at the Anzac Drive and Pages Road intersection overnight. She is 23-year-old Freedom Asha Moat.
