Crime surges across Canterbury
Statistics released to Labour through the Official Information Act indicate a crime surge in the region over the past two years.
[WTF: Even the ‘cooked’ statistics are only available through the Official Information Act ??? ]
Police admit they have no coherent idea how to prevent crime or eliminate the cause of it.
In the last two years the crime rates have surged by [at least] the following amounts:
Drug use: UP 36 per cent
Burglary: UP 33 per cent
Vehicle theft: UP 26 per
Public place assaults: UP 13 per cent
Rape: UP [records are most probably destroyed]
Police foot patrols: DOWN 16 per cent
Police Minister Judith ‘Crusher’ Collins insists foot patrols are not the only means of preventative actions taken by police to combat crime. [The fact that the system has completely failed… why am I still the frigging Police Minister… Then again, it’s the government policy not to give a fuck…]
Collins acknowledged current crime numbers were a concern and said police were “working hard to turn these figures around [one way, or another.]”
Christchurch judge accuses Government of breaching child’s rights
A 15-year-old boy has spent a sixth day in solitary confinement in Christchurch’s police cells because there is nowhere else to put him.
A judge has lashed out at the Government for its handling of the teen’s situation, accusing it of breaching the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The accusation came after a Youth Court sitting in Christchurch on Monday, where the 15-year-old was remanded in custody in police cells for a sixth day.
Judge Robert Murfitt said the boy was being held in solitary confinement because there was nowhere else to put him following the mothballing of a wing at Christchurch’s youth justice facility, Te Puna Wai. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/86951169/christchurch-judge-accuses-government-of-breaching-childs-rights
