What’s the life of a man worth in New Zealand?

The Department of Corrections has been ordered to pay a record (!) $172,000 to the family of Robert Charles Ian Cave who was fatally crushed by a log while doing community work on June 7, 2014.

“Corrections was ordered to pay reparations of $155,000 for emotional harm to Cave’s family, and a further $17,471.12 to the Cave’s father for financial losses.”

The judgement was entered by Chief District Court Judge Jan-Marie Doogue at a hearing in the Nelson District Court on Wednesday, according to a report.

[It’s unclear how the authorities reconcile the fact that families of selected Christchurch Earthquake victims received millions of dollars in compensation, while the reparation to  Cave family was a measly $172,000. Moderator]
