How a small plane crash disrupts lives of tens of thousands of people in New Zealand!

A small plane has crashed into power lines near Wairoa, just north of Tiniroto, killing at least two people and leaving tens of thousands of homes in Gisborne District without power.

More than 20,000 customers have been affected by the outage and are likely to be without power for several days.

The plane crash has caused significant damage to the city’s electricity infrastructure (!) leaving the entire city and multiple rural areas without power, said Gisborne mayor Meng Foon, local media reported.

“It’s [destroyed at least] four major pylons [made of Chinese steel?] and 800m worth of power lines.”

Civil Defence has told people to conserve water: No power, no water!

“Keep flushing the toilet to a minimum, don’t water the garden, and the biggest advice is to prepare and think about how you’ll be cooking,” their spokesperson said.

[Translation: Do not drink or cook, refrain from urinating or defecating indoors, AND shower and bath are certainly out of the question for the foreseeable future.]

Other News in Drips…

Police ought to have their tiny brains examined
The attempted kidnapping in Hamilton wasn’t abduction, believe us, police say. They could not say exactly what the man’s actions were but said “we were happy there was no sinister motive”.

Bill English is finally NZ’s Prime Minister

Bill [stats cook] English, is New Zealand’s 39th prime minister. He’s now been sworn in to maintain the status quo at Government House.

And as if that’s not bad enough, Paula [housing crisis] Bennett is joining him as the Deputy Prime Minister.

The wait continues for redevelopment of Hamilton’s slum

“At least five years after plans for redevelopment were first mooted, the decrepit properties still stand, says Hamilton Labour list MP Sue Moroney.”

“Pike River is a crime-scene” –Bernie Monk

Owner of Pike River mine’s access road gifts victims’ families legal control of the road

Colin Van der Geest, owner of Logburn Farm, where the mine’s access road is located, said he was “happy” for the families of the 29 men who were killed in the 2010 explosion to stage protests on his land until “the best possible conclusion has been reached,” according to a statement published by Newshub.

Good on ya, bro!

Victims’ families will now be able to set up a road block to Prevent Solid Energy’s attempts to seal the Pike River mine.

Pike River families’ spokesman Bernie Monk, who lost his son Michael in the disaster, said protestors would physically block the road tomorrow morning, preventing cement trucks from accessing the mine and sealing its entrance.

Van der Geest wrote in his letter his family had “deep sympathy” what the Pike River families had been going through and “respect your right to take this action”.

“We’ll be blockading it. If anyone passes that without our permission, we’ll be serving trespass notices on them,” he told Newshub.

Monk said the Department of Conservation would be granted access, as would anyone completing safety work.

“We’ll be in Wellington on Tuesday to take our new expert plan for re-entry to Bill English. He has the chance to do what his predecessor [John Key] wouldn’t and call off the sealing of the mine.

“Pike River is a crime-scene and we want to get into the drift to recover our loved ones’ remains and the evidence that might be down there.

“We’ve got a plan to do it and we’re not going to let the opportunity to get answers get buried under hundreds of tons of concrete,” Monk said.
