More signs they are coming!
A series of volcanic earthquakes has unnerved residents in Taupo and neighbouring areas.
Four shallow tremors occurred about 15km north-east of Taupo within about 40 minutes, GeoNet reported.
The opener was a 3.2 tremor at 10.01pm, followed by the 3.8 at 10.12pm, then a 2.7 at 10.25pm and a 2.9 at 10.37pm, which struck at ground level.
Meanwhile, more than a dozen aftershocks struck near Seddon, and several more near Kaikoura including a strong magnitude 4.6 shock that occurred 15 km west of Kaikoura at a depth of 9km at 10.47pm.
A GNS Science volcanologist is on record as saying the quakes didn’t warrant any heightened monitoring.
He said: “As for the cause of them, they’re basically located in a pretty active area of the country, just north of Taupo, where there’s a lot of faults and action: so it’s not unsual [sic] that we see quakes there at all.”
Let’s hope he is dead right!
