At least one death was negligent homicide

Bay of Plenty of Deaths

Woman drowned in the Waikato River after gates of the Aratiatia Dam were opened yesterday. The victim, most probably an overseas visitor, “was swept away yesterday when spillwater from the Mercury Energy-owned dam, near Taupo, surged down the Waikato River, and her body was found this morning,” said a report.

“Mercury Energy Chief Executive Fraser Whineray said the power company was reviewing the warning signs and procedures in the area to see if any improvements could be made,” said the report.

“We’ll be … checking to see if there’s anything further that can be done to minimise the risk, but we’d really ask, please, if people can not be down in the rapids area because it can be very dangerous when those spillways are open.”

Adding insult to injury, in the time-honoured Kiwi tradition, Taupo mayor said locals tended to stay away from the area on the Waikato River where the woman drowned.
