The woman who was killed in the single car crash on State Highway 14 at Maungatapere yesterday (December 23) was Fijian national Lalita Devi. She was a passenger in the car, police said. [What exactly happened to the driver???]

A young man died on his 21st birthday after losing control of his car on Jollies Pass Rd, Hanmer Springs about 12.40am on Sunday. “He turned 21 [years old] 40 minutes before the crash – it was his birthday,” Canterbury cop Pete Cooper said, adding that the victim was an Indian national on a work visa. The passenger in the car, a 20-year-old German man, was flown to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition. A man had got into trouble while fishing at Golden Bay, Tasman District, drowned by the time “emergency services” had arrived.  [That’s how long it normally takes!]
The victim was 49-year-old Mark Noel Salmons, police said.
