Sri Lanka Easter suicide attacks: Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen loses three of his four children in Colombo bombings

Breaking News: Death toll rises to at least 359

Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen has lost three of his four children in the Sri Lanka bombing attacks, the mainstream media reported.

“The family were visiting the country over the Easter holiday. The names of the children have not been made public.”

Anders Holch Povlsen (46) is Denmark’s wealthiest man with an estimated wealth of about $12b. The billionaire fashion tycoon is the biggest single shareholder in clothing giant Asos. He also owns the international fashion retailer chain Bestseller, which includes brands like Vero Moda and Jack & Jones, and holds a large stake in Zalando, online grocery store Nemlig and payments company Klarna.

He is also the largest landowner in Scotland, and the second-largest individual private landowner in Britain, after buying multiple historic estates. “He and his wife Anne hold an estimated 200,000 acres of the Scottish Highlands,” a report said.

A week before the bombing attacks, one of Povlsen’s children, Alma, posted a holiday snap of her siblings Agnes, Alfred and Astrid next to a pool, according to reports.

Suicide Bombings

At least 359 people were killed including 39 foreign nationals, and more that 500 others injured, as of posting, in eight coordinated terrorist attacks that occurred on 21 April 2019, Easter Sunday.

Three Christian churches across Sri Lanka and three luxury hotels in the commercial capital Colombo were targeted by terrorist suicide bombings. Smaller explosions later that day targeted a housing complex and a motel in two other cities.

Other Foreigners Killed

At least 39 foreign nationals were killed in the bombings including eight British citizens – two with joint US citizenship, three Danish citizens, as well as Portuguese, Turkish, Swiss, Chinese, Australians, Dutch, Bangladeshi, Japanese, US, Spanish and Indian nationals.

At least 45 children were killed in the attacks, including nine who were foreigners. In addition to the Danish billionaire’s three children, two British-American dual citizens, who were the children of former Chase Bank Vice President Matt Linsey, 63, were killed. They were teenage brother and sister Daniel Linsey, 19 and Amelie, 15, reports said.

Other victims include Shantha Mayadunne, a Sri Lankan TV chef, and her daughter, a Bangladeshi victim Zayan Chowdhury, 8, part of the dynastical Sheikh–Wazed family, and cousin of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.

A top British lawyer also lost his entire family. Ben Nicholson’s wife Anita, 42, son Alex, 14, and daughter Annabel, 11, were killed “as they sat at a table for breakfast in the Shangri-la Hotel in Colombo”.

Mr Nicholson is a partner at Kennedys Legal Solutions while his wife was a former legal adviser to the UK Treasury. According to her LinkedIn profile, she was currently managing counsel at the mining and metals company Anglo American.”

Intelligence Failures

Two government ministers have commented on intelligence failures amidst allegations that a rift between the President and Prime Minister contributed to respond to the threats: “Some intelligence officers were aware of this incidence. Therefore there was a delay in action. Serious action needs to be taken as to why this warning was ignored.”

The death toll continues to rise.
