Serious crash, SH1 Atiamuri – UPDATE 3

Sunday, 28 April 2019 – 2:57pm [Bay of Plenty of Multiple Fatalities]

Police can confirm that there have been multiple fatalities following the crash near Ohakuri Road this morning.

An SUV and a van have collided and a significant amount of debris has been strewn all over the road.

At the moment it is unclear how many people have been killed due to the catastrophic nature of the crash and therefore it will take some time for emergency services to establish exactly how many people have been involved in the crash.

The Disaster Victim Identification team (DVI) have been called in to assist with the investigation.

At least one person suffering critical injuries was air-lifted to hospital this morning.”

Catastrophic head-on collision between van and SUV

A van and SUV collided and a significant amount of debris has been strewn all over the road, police reported.

“It appears, for whatever reason, one of the vehicles has crossed the incorrect side of the road on a moderate bend,” Inspector Brent Crowe told media.

“To describe the scene behind us as a complete tragedy would be an understatement.”

“Our main priority, our main focus at the moment is to ensure we extract the deceased, look after the deceased and take care of them for their families,” he said.

Stuff reported:

The crash comes less than a month after five family members [including three schoolgirls] were killed on Tirohanga Rd, about 15 kilometres away.

A west-bound Ford Falcon had crashed into a gum tree tree, killing all occupants, except 11-year-old Isaac Morgan-Rangikataua, who was seriously injured.

His father, cousin and three school-age sisters all died at the scene.

Bad Stretch of Road

Fiona Mead, a Rotorua resident, who has been driven by her son along SH 1 in Atiamuri regularly told the Rotorua Daily Post that the “ground zero” was a “bad stretch of road”.

Some of the corners are blind, and the right-hand turns were particularly treacherous. “You have to be quick because the cars come quickly.”

Shontel Van Zyderveld,  another local, said she previously used the highway “all the time”.

“But since these accidents, I haven’t used it once. There has just been so much tragedy on that highway, I’m really not willing to use it at the moment.”

“I can never recall so many fatal accidents happening in such a short space of time in that area (South Waikato, Atiamuri, Tokoroa),” a former resident said.

Posted by te2ataria on April 28, 2019

Young woman missing from the Hawke’s Bay found dead

Missing in NZ (MINZ): Two of the missing found dead today!

Autumn Sciascia, 22, who was reported missing on Friday morning, has been found dead. Her body was found earlier today, police have now confirmed.

Autumn Sciascia, 22, was found dead two days after she was last seen by her family on Wednesday, (April 24). Police haven’t revealed the circumstances surrounding her tragic death. Photo: NZ police.

Ms. Sciascia’s [Italian] family had last heard from her on Wednesday morning, police said earlier. The car she drove was found abandoned in Waipukurau, suggesting something terrible might have happened to her.

UPDATE – Missing Hawkes Bay woman
Saturday, 27 April 2019 – 12:54pm

The 22-year-old Hawkes Bay woman reported missing on Friday morning, 26 April, has been found deceased.

Her death is not considered to be suspicious and has been referred to the Coroner.

[Note: Police acted discourteously by excluding Ms. Sciascia’s name from their last brusque report. Editor]

The circumstances surrounding tragic death of Ms Sciascia [pronounced “shasha”] are unclear. Also unclear, as per usual, is how the police arrived at the conclusion that “her death is not considered to be suspicious”.

What are police trying to hide?

Also puzzling is why policed hurriedly removed the missing notice, which included her photo, from their website.

The following notice, which includes the name “Sciascia” was still available on police website nine years after the incident occurred:

Dannevirke fatal crash victim’s name released
Tuesday, 21 December 2010 – 3:17pm

A young Dannevirke woman killed when the car she was driving left the road and crashed into the wall of a bank building in the town early this morning was Ms Cassandra Gail Schumann, aged 20 years.

Dannevirke Police say the crash happened at 1.45am on the corner of Stanley and London Streets. Two Dannevirke men who were also in the car are both in Palmerston North Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Mr Pakere Paewai, aged 23, is in a stable condition and the rear seat passenger Maurice Scott, also known as Mr Maurice Sciascia, aged 38 years, is in a critical but stable condition this afternoon.

Diversions were in place for several hours to allow a scene examination to take place. The cause of the crash is being investigated.

It was a busy night for emergency services in the town as at 3am police, fire and ambulance officers called out to a crash where a car skidded off State Highway 2, 5km north of Dannevirke, and went into a tree.

The driver and sole occupant, Mr Hohepa Black, was airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital where this afternoon he is in a stable condition.

Another missing person found dead!
