    “A M5.5 earthquake has occurred 15 km north of Milford Sound (Latitude -44.52 ; Longitude 167.86) at 12km deep. 10:35 PM Monday 12th August 2019. This earthquake was felt widely throughout the South Island of New Zealand and lower North Island, and there are currently more than [6,850] felt reports. The event was orginally posted at a M6.2, but following analysis by our team this was reviewed to a M5.5. We have located more than 10 aftershocks and this is normal following an event of this size.”

    The quake struck hours after a magnitude 5.2 quake hit near Motueka, which resulted in 2, 100 felt reports submitted by people throughout central New Zealand.
