Hsiu Hua Cheng, described as ‘amazing soul’, killed in crash near Lake Rotoiti, Saturday

Hsiu Hua Cheng, (known as Sheila), aged 51, an ICU nurse at Whakatāne Hospital, described as an ‘amazing soul’ and an “exceptional” person, “who spent days treating burns victims following the Whakaari eruption tragedy, was killed in a car crash” near Lake Rotoiti on Saturday.

“Her husband, 49-year-old Rhys Bugden, is recovering from critical injuries in Waikato Hospital,” a report said.

“A post-mortem examination will be conducted today to ascertain how a Tokomaru Bay man died as part of the ongoing homicide investigation that continues in the coastal settlement.
