Massive marine heatwave raises ocean temperatures by 5ºC

A massive marine heatwave, measuring about one million square kilometres, has raised the ocean temperature by about 5ºC above the normal (15ºC) off the east coast of New Zealand, a report said.

Police can now release the name of the man who died following a crash on Orari-Rangitata Highway near Ealing on 18 December.
He was 42-year-old Shaun Donald Anderson from Kaiapoi.
CORRECTION: Name Release, fatal vehicle incident – Mataura
An earlier release regarding the death of an 18-month-old boy in Mataura on Saturday 21 December was incorrect.
The boy’s surname was Henderson, not Anderson.

Police can now confirm the person who died following a fatal crash in Blenheim yesterday (27 December) was a pedestrian.
The crash occurred on John Street around 8:40pm.

One person has died following an incident in Houhora, in the Far North.
Police were notified to the incident where a boat capsized near Houhora Harbour’s east beach about 11.15 this morning.

A person has died following a snorkelling incident in Kai Iwi Lakes near Omamari at around 3pm today.
The person was found unresponsive in the water and taken ashore.
They could not be revived.

Body of missing swimmer located – Waipu
The body of a missing swimmer has been located in Bream Bay, near Waipu.
Police were advised at 10.10am that a person had gotten into difficulty while swimming in the bay.
Police Search and Rescue, Coastguard, a rescue helicopter and Ruakaka Surf Club lifeguards took part in the search operation, however, the body of the swimmer was located around midday in the water.

Baton Valley crash victim airlifted to Christchurch in medically-induced coma
A Nelson teenager seriously injured in a car crash in the Motueka Valley has been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a medically-induced coma.
On Sunday, in an interview with MacLean’s parents, The New Zealand Herald reported the teenager had been on the bonnet of the vehicle when it had collided with the tree (!!!)
“He has sustained major crush injuries with bones and organs affected and will need multiple surgeries and ongoing specialist medical care to get through this.”

Police and emergency services are in attendance at a crash involving two vehicles on the Fred Taylor Drive off-ramp by the North Western Motorway.
Two people have been transported to hospital, one person is in a serious condition and one person has moderate injuries.

Body located in vehicle, Buller Gorge – Murchison
Police have today recovered the body of a man located inside a vehicle in the Upper Buller Gorge area in Murchison.
The vehicle was located yesterday down a cliff, about 100 metres from the Lyell Creek culvert.
While formal identification is yet to take place, Police believe the man is the 71-year-old previously reported missing from Motueka.
