Even ‘Green’ Cruise Ships Are Polluting the Earth at Incredible Rates  FoE

Cruise ships flushed more than a billion gallons of sewage into oceans in 2014

A large cruise ship can use up to 250 tons of fuel, per day. “In terms of regular gasoline, that would be about 80,645 gallons.”

The average cruise ship produces more than ten-million gallons of sewage per year. In 2014, cruise ships dumped more than one-billion gallons of sewage into the sea, according to a study by FoE.

Friends of the Earth’s 2014 Cruise Ship Report Card reveals that some of the 16 cruise lines graded are slowly getting greener; but more than 40 percent of the 167 ships still rely on 35-year-old waste treatment technology. Such antiquated treatment systems leave harmful levels of fecal matter, bacteria, heavy metals and other contaminants in the water. By law, wastewater dumped within three nautical miles of shore must be treated, but beyond that ships are allowed to dump raw sewage directly into the ocean. For this reason, the issue of accountability is paramount for the 2014 report card.

About 30 million people cruised on more than 300 ships in 2019, according to various estimates.

“Cruise ships, especially ones out of Florida, are a cesspool of bacteria, viruses and mold due to the humidity,.” a report said.

2018 Worldwide Cruise Line Passenger Capacity

“Total worldwide ocean cruise capacity at the end of 2018 will be 537,000 passengers and 314 ships. Annualized total passengers carried worldwide will be 26.0 million (a 3.3% increase over 2017).”  –Cruise Market watch

International tourists, especially cruise ship travellers truly deserve what they catch on the floating Petri dishes. If illnesses like gastrointestinal diseases, influenza, Legionnaires’ disease and Hepatitis A, which are most commonly associated with cruise ship travel, and now COVID-19 and its quarantine “prison sentence”, aren’t strong enough deterrents, perhaps the more serious stuff could change things, hopefully!

What’s really hilarious about the despicables, cruise ship passengers, is the fact they’re also dished out a “prison sentence” for their anti-environmental misdeeds onboard the polluting vessels.
