Avatar crew allowed into NZ despite immigration rules
“The government allowed the Avatar film crew to come to New Zealand when no criteria for it existed in immigration rules.”
“New rules were published on Tuesday and were backdated to 2 June, but the crew and other workers were allowed exemptions to the border closure last month.
“Immigration lawyer James McLeod said the original criteria from March did not allow for exceptions on the grounds of significant economic value.”
He said:
I don’t see how the decision to allow the Avatar crew into New Zealand could have been made pursuant to the immigration instructions in force at the time, because the definition of essential worker was much narrower then.
It involved delivering a response to the Covid-19 crisis, and/or maintaining critical infrastructure, neither of which I would consider a Hollywood film would fall within.
The immigration Minister also granted permission to two America’s Cup crews and their families to enter NZ despite the rules.

Murder of Bridget Simmonds: body found on rural property
Police investigating the disappearance of missing Northland woman Bridget Simmonds have located a body.
A team of investigators have been working relentlessly to find the 43-year-old mother of two since she was reported missing on March 6 last year.
Yesterday, Police concentrated their efforts on searching an area on one of the properties and have since discovered the remains of a body buried on that property.
While the formal identification process is not yet complete, Police have reason to believe it is that of Bridget.

ANALYSIS: The Government has talked up the transparency of its $11b Covid-19 wage subsidy scheme. But if you want to see a list of every recipient, you’re out of luck. Even half of them? Nope.
The illusion of transparency has been created by an online search tool that allows members of the public – and stickybeak journalists – to look up a company’s name and see whether it’s received the subsidy.
But the search engine returns only five results at a time. Stuff – and other media – sought the full list. It seemed a straightforward request. We only wanted what the Government had already made public, just in a different form.
Days went by and it became clear the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) could not, or would not, provide the list. Why?
“We designed the tool with close involvement from the Privacy Commissioner to ensure compliance with the Privacy Act,” said Nadine Kilmister, a deputy chief executive at the ministry, in a statement.

For valid privacy reasons, total transparency will never be possible. But to refuse to provide even a redacted list of recipients falls well short of the insight taxpayers deserve.
