Car ‘used as a weapon’ at suburban party

By IAN STEWARD – The Press | Monday, 23 June 2008

A motor vehicle was “used as a weapon” when a man was run over during a fight outside a Phillipstown party on Saturday night, say Christchurch police.

A 29-year-old man was in a medically induced coma in Christchurch Hospital yesterday after he was “run over” and dragged beneath a car outside the party on Stevens Street.

Detective Sergeant Greg Cottam said about three carloads of people had turned up at the 70-person 21st birthday party and had been welcomed in.

After an altercation inside, a fight broke out and “spilled onto the street”.

The fight involved weapons including “bottles, a baseball bat and, possibly, iron bars”, Cottam said.

“One of the group that had arrived then got into a vehicle and drove into one of the party-goers, running him over.”

The man was dragged about 25m under the car.

“It appears he was involved in the altercation but he didn’t deserve to be run over.”

The man was taken to hospital and underwent surgery yesterday for a damaged liver, broken legs, fractured ribs, a punctured lung and a fractured pelvis.

“Thankfully, his head injuries were superficial grazes and cuts. He’s pretty lucky to be alive.

“It’s a classic case of a vehicle being used as a weapon,” Cottam said.

“It’s no different to using a knife or a gun to try and kill someone.”

Police had not located the driver or the occupants of the three cars and were “very interested” in hearing from anyone who saw cars leaving the area in Phillipstown at speed just after midnight.

Cottam said the house was opposite AMI Stadium and plenty of people would have been leaving corporate boxes after the All Blacks-England rugby test match that night or leaving the neighbouring Seventy-7 Bar and Restaurant at the time.

The incident was not related to the rugby, he said.

Cottam said hospital staff seemed confident the man would survive, though he was still listed as being in a critical condition last night.

Anyone with information or who may have seen cars leaving the area on Saturday night is asked to contact Cottam on 363 7400.
