Want to Experience Death, Horrific Injuries or Earthquakes?

Posted by te2ataria on January 22, 2012

YOU could have your toddler raped, too!

New Zealand is 100% YOU!

“If you haven’t felt an earthquake before it is an unusual experience and if some people are into that, we’d love to have them,” said Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter.

“Quake-hit Christchurch has become the destination of choice for holiday-makers wanting to experience the earth moving,” claims FairFacts.

“Motel Association Christchurch branch president Mike Brown said he had heard anecdotal reports of people being attracted to the city by the prospect of experiencing a quake, but the visitors he met were wary of the quakes and shocked by how damaging they could be,” according to a report.

Violent Crimes in NZ: “Tip of the Iceberg”

Posted by te2ataria on February 7, 2010

How can the statistics be “showing that crime is dropping”?

Reader “Reggio” comments on the number of violent crimes in New Zealand:

This is actually only the tip of the iceberg.  My local paper is not searchable online, and just glancing at Thursday’s edition, I notice a stick-up of a tourist at the supermarket parking lot.  They ripped his shirt off and punched him when he said he had no money.  Another attack occurred elsewhere in town, man knocked to ground and kicked, cellphone and wallet taken.  One vehicle stolen, one house burgled, one assault, one attempted burglary at a motel, one drunken driving incident causing a multiple car crash, one shop window smashed. In a tourist town of several thousand people. The New Zealand National Survey of Crime Victims cited an incidence of crime that was “twice the figure in the police reports”. I think people weigh the amount of nuisance it will cause them for no outcome and decide not to report.  How can the statistics be “showing that crime is dropping”?  Could it be wishful thinking? A redesign of crime categories?
