Reported cases of gonorrhoea triple in South Canterbury

The number of cases of gonorrhoea reported in South Canterbury in the past 12 months has almost trebled, raising concern among some health professionals.

About 35 cases of gonorrhoea were reported per 100,000 people in the first quarter of 2019, according to data released by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR). In the same period of 2018, the reported cases were 12 per 100,000 people.

Cases of syphilis and gonorrhoea rising in New Zealand – ESR

Cases of syphilis in New Zealand continue to increase, with new ESR data showing 548 reported for the 12 months ended March 2019 and these cases concentrated among men aged 20 to 39.

The number of syphilis cases is up from 527 for the 12 months ended December 2018, and from a total of 82 reported cases five years earlier (based on data available for the 12 months ended December 2013.  […]

The increase in total syphilis cases includes a recent rise in congenital syphilis (confirmed and probable) to three cases during the 2018 calendar year, with two additional cases still under investigation, and a further two cases reported so far in 2019. Congenital syphilis is a serious multi-system infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum which is passed from mother to developing foetus during pregnancy. This results in miscarriage or still birth in about half of cases.  […]

The ESR data show gonorrhoea rates have increased significantly in recent years, with 117 cases per 100,000 of the New Zealand population reported for the 12 months ended March 2019.  The rate for the 12 months ended December 2017 was 99, and for the 12 months ended December 2013 it was 77.

Gonorrhoea rates have increased significantly since 2015 with the highest rates reported in men aged 20-29 years. The increase in the national rate is largely driven by cases reported from the Auckland region where male rates continue to be well above the national average.

A new questionnaire was completed for about 30% of cases notified from October 2018 to March 2019. Of these cases, 34% were reported in men who have sex with men, while a further 21% were in heterosexual men and 23% in heterosexual women.

Chlamydia rates have changed little in the past two years but chlamydia continues to be the most commonly reported STI in New Zealand with the highest number of cases and rates reported in females aged 15−29 years.  In the 12 months ended March 2019, there were 653 cases per 100,000 population, compared with 644 in the 12 months ended December 2017. Syphilis infections jump by 68 percent in Hobbit Land

Posted by te2ataria on December 25, 2012

Sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates continue to rise in New Zealand

100 percent pure STIs: Clinical surveillance figures show a five per cent increase in chlamydia and gonorrhoea rates and a massive surge of 68 percent in the incident rate of syphilis in New Zealand over the last quarter.

One in three people in New Zealand get STIs, according to Family Planning national medical advisor Dr Christine Roke, and many would not even realize it.

“Roke said antibiotic resistance had meant higher doses were needed in treating some infections, but the main problem was the rate of undiagnosed infections out there at any one time,” according to a report.

NZ women are world’s most promiscuous

New Zealand: A rapidly self-destroying culture that never was

Shocking number of pregnant women cannot remember whom they slept with: NZ Gynaecologist

Dr Albert Makary, who has been in Timaru for 20 years, called on national leaders, sports stars, schools and the media at a Forum on the Family in Auckland yesterday to “stigmatise” both promiscuity and the binge drinking that usually preceded it.

Condom-maker’s data may be underestimated

Previously, a survey by a condom maker had revealed that New Zealand women were the most promiscuous in the world, with 20.3 sexual partners on average, with the world average being 7.3.

Kiwi men were also above average with 16.8 partners. New Zealand was the only country where women had more sexual partners than men.

Numbers of kiwi pedophiles/child sex were not included in the survey.

Dr Makary, a 52-year-old Christian originally from Egypt, said he was “an eyewitness of the pain” that promiscuity causes.

He is one of only three gynaecologists in Timaru and sees scans of the town’s pregnant women because there is no other radiology service.

“I get women coming in and saying, ‘Doctor, I can’t remember who I slept with yesterday.’

“It is very, very frequent. I’m not talking about one or two or three or 1000 cases. I’m talking about thousands and thousands of cases a year [nationally].”

AND, they’re proud of it.

“Here is a culture which says if you can remember what happened yesterday you haven’t had enough fun,” Dr Makary said.

“There’s a lot of pressure on the kids. This culture doesn’t only affect those subscribing to it. It affects those who don’t subscribe by being marginalised and ostracised.”

He said Kiwi society “normalised” drunkenness and promiscuity. Even drink driving campaigns implied that it was okay to get drunk as long as you didn’t drive. Sex education focused on safe sex implied that sleeping around was okay “as long as you’re wearing the right gear”.

Young women wore their sexual popularity as a badge of honour. One young student boasted that she slept with 20 men in orientation week.

“If you want a new word – ‘stud-ess’ – you are removing another word: ‘mum’,” Dr Makary said.

Promiscuity undermined stable life-long relationships: Dr Makary

The symptoms were increasing violence, sexual assault, alcohol- and drug-fuelled car accidents, a growing incidence of depression and the world’s highest rates of both chlamydia and youth suicide.

He called on all parts of society to end the normalisation and glamorisation of promiscuity.

kiwis top the world charts in the following categories

23.  New Zealand women have the highest numbers of sexual partners in the world. They sleep with  an average of 20.4 sexual partners, condom-maker Durex said. [The global average is 7.3.] New Zealand women also came top as the only female group more promiscuous than their men, who averaged 16.8 sexual partners.
