Graduating doctors starting work with about $100K debt

Graduating medical students are starting their working life with student loan debts of about $100k, says a new University of Auckland study, which also shows the average medical student debt has increased by $20,000 in the last 10 years.

“This kind of high level of debt is obviously particularly worrying if you don’t have the kind of confidence that you’ll be able to pay that back and of course people who come from wealthier backgrounds are likely to be more confident that they’ll be able to pay back that debt,” said Medical Students Association president.

Bus drivers in the sky:  NZ’s pilot numbers continue to fall

Civil Aviation Authority data show the number of sky bus drivers in commercial and air transport it approved fell by almost a half, from 709 to 386, between 2009 and 2016.

Entry-level pilots are required to clock at least 1,500 hours of flying.

“You could be talking about a two-year course with a six-figure student loan, and you are probably employable at not too far above the minimum wage as a very inexperienced, low-hours instructor,” said the president of Flying New Zealand.

The Environmental Silver Lining

A University of North Dakota study predicts a global shortage of about 15,000 pilots by 2026.

Helicopter company licence finally suspended, 6 months after fatal crash

Posted by te2ataria on May 30, 2016

Civil Aviation Authority finally suspends the Air Operating Certificate of Alpine Adventures

The South Island helicopter firm involved in the fatal crash at Fox Glacier last year has finally been grounded over safety issues six months later.

The Civil Aviation Authority [finally took their thumb out of their backside and] suspended the Air Operating Certificate (AOC) of James Patrick Scott, whose company, Alpine Adventures, has operated flights in Fox Glacier, Franz Josef, and Tekapo.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) director Graeme Harris confirmed the suspension while the CAA investigated concerns about the safety of the operation.

Seven people were killed in the November 2015 crash including the Dutch-born 28-year-old pilot Mitch Gameren, four visitors from England—Andrew Virco of Cambridge, 50, Katharine Walker of Cambridge, 51, Nigel Edwin Charlton of Hampshire, 66, Cynthia Charlton of Hampshire, 70, and two tourists from  New South Wales, Asutralia—Sovannmony Leang, 27, and Josephine Gibson, 29.

How Many Foreigners Killed in NZ Since 2000?

About 3,500 overseas visitors, international students, foreign workers, recent emigrants and refugees have lost their lives and 20,000 others seriously injured in New Zealand since year 2000.

The State’s other Stinking Secrets

Truth hurts New Zealand tourism. The average tourist would not visit this country, if they knew true extent of the daily carnage on our deadly roads. Therefore:

To protect the tourism industry, about two-thirds of the road fatalities in New Zealand go unreported by our political police, or unrecorded by Minitru [“Ministry of Transport”.]

About 2.7 million licensed but not necessary qualified drivers, half million or so unlicensed/unqualified drivers and more than one million tourists (per year) drive on New Zealand death roads.

A large number of the above drive a vehicle under the influence (illicit drugs, banned substances, prescription medication…), while intoxicated, fatigued or mentally unfit, resulting in inordinate numbers of fatalities and injuries. [Other factors for the carnage include deadly roads, road unworthy vehicles…]

Between 2001 and 2014, New Zealand’s vehicle fleet reportedly increased by 32 per cent, while the population grew by 16 per cent and foreign travel was up by 15 per cent.  And over the last 10 years the number of international visitors has increased by about 30 per cent.

Today is DAY 165 of the latest NZ TOURISTS or truth? (police censorship of road fatalities) campaign

  • Blog estimate: About 900 people are killed on NZ roads each year. [Most probably] up to 370 road fatalities have occurred in NZ since 1 January 2016

How do they do it?

Police manipulate the road toll by censoring reports of fatal crashes, while the Ministry of Transport simply delete the unwanted road fatalities, even from their published records.

Only one road fatality recorded, despite at least two reported fatal crashes since Thursday. There were also six people critically injured, whose fates remain unknown.

Convicted trout poacher: NZ justice system ‘racist’

Thomas Tawha, the man jailed for poaching trout alongside his cousin David Leef, says the justice system is prejudiced against Māori.

This follows Ara Adams-Tamatea’s Facebook post, pointing out the difference in sentencing between a group of white men, and Leef, that gained huge traction online last week.

It read: “Both parties broke the law, and both parties were sorry. One party committed burglaries to the tune of $80k for fun while the other stole 10 fish to feed his family. Both crimes in the eyes of the law and I’m not disputing that. One gets to “serve time” at home with their family while the other has to serve jail time and leave his family. Take a wild guess who has to go to jail for stealing 10 fish. Not 80,000 fish or $80,000 worth of fish. 10 fish VS $80k of private property.” http://www.newshub.co.nz/nznews/convicted-trout-poacher-nz-justice-system-racist-2016052912

The Top Cow and Her Judges

More complaints about top Cow Dame Sian Elias’ judges, but farm says rules ‘ridiculous’

Judges owned by the top cow Dame Sian Elias have wandered into Canterbury waterways at least three times since a warning issued in January.

Stock from The Lakes station in North Canterbury have been in Lake Sumner, and in the Hurunui River, which is a clear breach of the rules.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) issued Elias and Fletcher a warning after a holidaymaker photographed their cows standing in Lake Taylor, which borders a Department of Conservation (Doc) campsite, in January.

After an investigation, ECan determined they had breached the rules but stopped short of issuing a fine, saying it was an isolated incident.   http://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/80360205/more-complaints-about-top-judge-dame-sian-elias-cows

ECan has since used various excuses in February, March and April to not issue fines, despite overabundance of odorous evidence, cow excrement on both sides of the Hurunui River, and both in Lake Taylor and Lake Sumner.

Air NZ receives $76m ‘crash cash’

Posted by te2ataria on March 15, 2009

$76m payout? Not bad for an aging flying coffin!

One interesting news item this week was the report of NZ$76m [USD40m] payout to Air New Zealand, [the world’s sub-aqua airline]

The first point of interest was age of the plane, only 2 years old according to New Zealand’s Herald on Sunday, which wrote:

Last month insurers for Air NZ – which owned the Airbus A320 but had leased it to the German airline XL Airways – paid out [only 😉 ] $76m on the two-year-old aircraft. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10561736

Now,  EADS, the company that owns Airbus, the maker of the plane, had earlier reported that  the downed Air NZ plane was more than 4 years old in a press release:

Accident Near Perpignan, France – Media Information on A320 flight accident (Issue I) – Toulouse, 27  November  2008

Airbus regrets to confirm that an A320 operated by XL Airways Germany and owned by Air New Zealand was involved in an accident this afternoon. The aircraft was operating a flight from Perpignan, France with seven passengers on board.

The aircraft involved in the accident was MSN (Manufacturer Serial Number) 2500, delivered in July 2005. The aircraft had accumulated approximately 7000 flight hours in some 2800 flight cycles. It was powered by IAE V2500 engines. At this time no further factual information is available.  . . .

What’s the difference?

The residual value of the aircraft! If the doomed Air NZ plane was only 2 years old, it’s ‘re-sale’ value would have been about  80-90 percent of replacement cost of a new plane [about US$50m, depending on the cabin design and type of engine used.]

However, a 4 to 5-year-old Airbus A320 would be worth no more than about 60 – 70 percent of cost of the replacement, assuming average condition.

Here’s when things get more interesting

  • Cost of new Airbus A320-200:  ~ NZ$95m
  • “Re-sale” value of MSN2500 (the crashed aircraft) :  ~ 65% x NZ$95m [cost of new plane]  NZ$61.75m  [Say, NZ$62m ]
  • ‘Crash Cash’ received in settlement:  NZ$76m
  • Unexplained additional ‘bonus’ paid out by the insurers to Air NZ ~ NZ$14m [at this rate, Air NZ could make a fortune ditching all their planes in the Mediterranean sea.]

NZherald went on to say:

Whatever the amount, it is unlikely to approach the multi-million-dollar settlements traditionally awarded by American courts after air crashes.

You’d better believe it!

An Air NZ spokesman said the company had yet to decide if it would replace the Airbus.

It’d be very interesting to learn the outcome of their decision. The odds look like 14,000,000 to 1 against a replacement!

On the issue of compensation for the victims, NZHerald wrote:

But compensation for the families of the five New Zealanders who died – pilot Brian Horrell, 52, aircraft engineers Noel Marsh, 35, Michael Gyles, 49 and Murray White 37, and Civil Aviation Authority inspector Jeremy Cook, 58 – is likely to be a more complex issue.

Well, will they or won’t they? [The victims’ families hitting the jackpot.] That depends on a number of factors

  • Was is not pilot error that caused the Air NZ Airbus300 to crash, as France’s Bureau d’Enquetes et d’Analyses (BEA) suggested in their report?
  • Were the pilots poorly trained/ incompetent/ tired/ flying under the influence/etc?
  • Is Air NZ in the business of ripping off insurance companies, only to hand over the settlement cash to the victims’ families?
  • Did the ailing Air NZ sabotaged its own unneeded/ no longer viable to maintain aircraft for the insurance money?
  • Other factors not stated here.

NZHerald article is posted at: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10561736

[That said, Air new Zealand was ass-lucky not to have had any Israeli passengers on-board because they would have taken the airline to the cleaners! Moderator]
