Chinese workers exploited in NZ: Union
The Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMTU) claims more than two dozen Chinese engineers are most likely being exploited in New Zealand, reported Newstalk ZB.
RMTU wants the Employment Court to decide whether foreign workers are subject to our employment laws [or else near-slavery conditions would be perfectly legal?]
It comes after recent revelations that 20 Chinese workers were being paid $4 by KiwiRail last year, and living in “cramped conditions”.
[Note: “cramped conditions” is a gross understatement. At $4 an hour, it would take 10 Chinese engineers, working for KiwiRail and paying half of their combined wages, to afford a two-bedroom flat in NZ’s larger cities. Moderator K.]
