“Two people have died in a motorcycle crash in Southland this afternoon.
The crash occurred near the intersection of Fairfax Isla Bank Road and Riverton Otautau Road at 12.45pm. A third person has suffered critical injuries.
Initial reports suggested four people had been involved in the crash, and at least two motorcycles. We can now confirm three motorcycles were involved, and three riders. No other vehicles were involved.”

Saturday, 17 November 2018 – 12:33pm – Canterbury

Canterbury Police are urging drivers and passengers to buckle up and drive safely after two fatal crashes within 12 hours offered a timely reminder yesterday. Enquiries are ongoing into a single vehicle crash on Gloucester Street, Christchurch, around 11.15pm where one person died and three others were taken to hospital. Earlier on Friday, around 11.10am, one person died in a crash at the intersection of Colombo Street and Sandyford Street in Sydenham, Christchurch. At least two more ‘condemned’ tourists ‘executed, two others critically injured on NZ death roads

‘Tourist killed after van shunts car into path of truck’
“A tourist was killed in a Christchurch crash after their car was shunted into the path of a oncoming truck.
The fatality occurred at the corner of Main South Rd and Foremans Rd, Islington, just after 10am on Monday, a report said.
“The crash comes minutes after another car and truck collided near the Christchurch International Airport, at the intersection of Savills Rd and Pound Rd.”

‘Car in fatal collision with tourist bus was a rental – police’
“One person was killed and 10 injured, one critically, after a car and bus collided on State Highway 6 just south of Kingston yesterday (Nov. 1). Police confirmed this morning the car involved was a rental carrying two foreign nationals. The driver of the car remains in a critical condition.”

“It was the second fatal crash involving a car and tourist bus in the area in just over two weeks. Harpreet Singh was killed when his car and a bus carrying 14 tourists collided near the Devil’s Staircase, about 15km north of Kingston, on October 14.”

About 200 crashes have occurred on the road near near the Devil’s Staircase since 2000, including six fatal and 12 serious [/critical] collisions, the report said.

“Police have located a body this afternoon in the search for a 32-year-old Tauranga man. The man’s vehicle was found near McLaren Falls overnight. The death is not being treated as suspicious.”

Strong earthquake strikes Opunake in Taranaki

Magnitude 5.0 quake felt widely throughout the lower North Island

A strong 5.0 quake struck the town of Opunake, Taranaki at 5.59am this morning.

The quake struck at a depth of 14km about 10km north of the town and was felt widely throughout the lower North Island, according to reports.

Geonet initially reported the quake as a “severe” 5.2 magnitude, but later revised it down to 5.0.

Aftershocks could be expected in region after the quake,

“The most likely scenario is smaller aftershocks over the coming days, but we can’t rule out there will be another one the same size,” said a Geonet seismologist.

Two males, both aged 20, have each been charged with street racing causing a fatal crash on State Highway 3 near Hamilton, which killed four people and injured several others, on 24th June 2016.
