Once again, who needs clean water in New Zealand??

Raised levels of lead found in five Dunedin primary schools

The Southern District Health Board say they are investigating raised levels of lead in five Dunedin primary schools: Bathgate Park, George Street Normal, Mornington, North East Valley and Opoho, a report said.

“Medical officer of health Marian Poore said the highest sample level was 595mg of lead per kg of soil, which is above the recommended government standard for home gardens (210mg) but below [the totally arbitrary level set] for public parks (880mg).”

Principals’ Federation criticise delay on reporting lead levels

The Principals’ Federation say they are alarmed the health authorities have taken about 16 months before telling schools that soil on school grounds are contaminated with raised levels of lead.

“Bathgate Park was one of the schools affected, and principal Whetu Cormack told Morning Report he was only told by the Ministry of Education about the results yesterday,” a report said.

Lead exposure destroys your life
“Children with elevated blood-lead levels at age 11 ended up as adults with lower cognitive function and lower-status occupations than their parents…”

“The findings, published [in March] in JAMA, were based on a study that followed about 1,000 children born in the early 1970s in the coastal city of Dunedin, New Zealand. More than half were tested for lead in 1983, and nearly three decades later, those who’d had higher blood-lead levels as children were more likely to have lower IQs and to wind up lower on the socioeconomic ladder. Both associations remained even after researchers accounted for the children’s IQs, their mothers’ IQs and their social-class backgrounds.”

The dairy industry gives a new meaning to Golden Bay
“While monitoring water quality at Te Waikoropupū Springs Friends of Golden Bay noticed that where Fish Creek flows into the Springs reserve it repeatedly had an unpleasant appearance and smell after rain events.”

“Bearing in mind the recent outbreak of illness in Hawke’s Bay, we initially tested for both Campylobacter and E.coli. We took samples during rain events when the problem was evident. We are glad to report no Campylobacter was found. However, the picture with E.coli is a different matter. We present the results in the table below,” say Friends of Golden Bay.

E-coli levels from farm runoff under rain events will always be high and exceed drinking and swimming water standards.” and “It is common to get between 1,000-10,000 E.coli/100ml, depending on the density of cows and timing of when the cows were last in the paddock. It is like where we were at with dairy shed effluent 20 years ago.”

E-coli found in Waimarama water supply

Residents in Waimarama, Hawke’s Bay, have been told to boil their water, after E-coli bacteria was detected in the public water supply.

People in Hastings District Council should boil the water before using it for “drinking, cleaning teeth, making ice, washing dishes and preparing food.”

“The council is [already] the focus of a public inquiry into how campylobacter got into their water supply last year.”

Two weeks ago, the Enfield Road Reservoir in Hawke’s Bay that supplies much of Napier was chlorinated after testing positive for E-coli.

The Chinese Dilemma: Do I move to China, or do I stay in China

Posted by te2ataria on August 15, 2016

Instead of seeing a balanced ethnic mix, Auckland started to acquire an unwholesomely Chinese flavour: Chinese state agent

“Going to Auckland is like going to China,” two Japanese professionals said.

“You don’t hear English, you don’t see Kiwis, there is just Chinese, Chinese and Chinese.”

The final option for the failed Chinese?
“New Zealand First’s Winston Peters said many immigrants choose New Zealand when they have failed entering Canada, US, UK and Australia he is right.”

“At least it is a well perceived notion among my fellow Chinese that only the ‘less fortunate’ choose New Zealand.”

“Lower quality immigrants”
“As a consequence, we have been absorbing lower quality immigrants who neither have the intention to assimilate to our culture nor the intention to set up all inclusive businesses that provide jobs for Kiwis.”

Female tourist killed in car crash near Lake Pukaki

Posted by te2ataria on March 13, 2016

Foreword: Censorship, news blackout and disinformation are serious threats to a democracy, even one as theatrical as ours!
One way to manipulate the road toll statistics, second only to news censorship, is to report most of the dead as being in a “serious/critical” condition, or in intensive care. This way, if the news leaks, the “seriously injured” could always be pronounced “dead as a result of their injuries!”

Two killed here, three killed there, soon we’ll be talking another weekend carnage!

Christchurch mum Tash Smith was stuck in a swinging, hot gondola for nearly two hours with four screaming children. Smith felt the company “failed their duty of care and treated us worse then livestock”.

“The way [staff] handled it was disgusting.” Aside from vowing never going on the city’s gondolas again, the children – aged 4, 7, 7, and 8 – had “been put off for life” going on any similar attractions abroad.

Stalled high above the ground, the carriage swung in the wind and jolted whenever it appeared maintenance staff were trying to move it. “It was scary, and sent the kids off each time,” Smith said. “They were in tears and screaming in fear, saying ‘we’re going to die’.” http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/76658472/Trapped-in-a-hot-swinging-gondola-Kids-were-screaming

Another tourist hit and killed by a truck in Napier

Posted by te2ataria on September 30, 2015

Police update: The fatal crash victim was Murray Anthony Reid. He was reportedly a resident of Mount Manganui.

UK tourist witnessed fatal crash that killed her husband

“Unfortunately the man’s wife has witnessed the crash, which is horrific when you think about it,” said the local cop, Senior Sergeant Brown.

The victim’s identity is known, but his name won’t be released until police have advised the remainder of the family.

The intersection where the fatal crash occurred “is in the top five for serious and fatal crashes in the country, and was the scene of a near-fatal collision between a logging truck and a car only a few months ago,” according to a report.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is planning to install a roundabout at the intersection, where other people have also been killed, in the next two years, the report quoted the cop as saying.

“It is one of those intersections that for some unexplained reason people keep making mistakes with. The speed has previously been reduced to 80km/h to reduce the risk but perhaps this needs to be explored further in light of the latest crashes.”

Moderator’s note: New Zealand is plagued with poorly constructed roads, hundreds of blind spots, and fatal intersections that for obvious reasons lead to deadly crashes in which hundreds of people are killed each year.

About 3,400 overseas visitors, international students, foreign workers and new immigrants have been killed and at least 18,000 others seriously injured in New Zealand since the year 2000.

Injured Indian schoolboy dies in New Zealand

Posted by te2ataria on September 7, 2015

9-year-old Indian schoolboy passes away

Aryan Banerjee, a 9-year-old Indian schoolboy who was critically injured after he was “left hanging by his shirt from a school toilet window” in May, has died.

His father said his son passed away peacefully in his parents’ arms at Hawke’s Bay Hospital earlier today.

“The parents of nine-year-old Aryan Banerjee, who was critically injured following a fall from a Taradale School window in May, wish to advise that tragically Aryan passed away earlier today”, the Hospital said in a statement.

Aryan was found unconscious after he had ALLEGEDLY jumped out a window because the door wouldn’t open (!) and his shirt got caught, leaving him hanging.

Aryan had been in an induced coma after he was nearly strangled on May 25 and had suffered significant brain damage since.

The police have not revealed any details about the tragic incident, but said they were treating it as an accident.

An accident? WTF!

The poor boy’s only “fault”, as cruel as it might sound, probably was he couldn’t choose “white” parents!

Based on their experience, the moderators believe Aryan was victim of foul play like dozens of other Indians who have been killed in New Zealand, just because their “wrong” skin colour.

We do NOT for a moment believe he died accidentally, regardless of what the police might say.

We hope his family has the fortitude to hire reputable private detectives to investigate the circumstances that led to their son’s tragic death!

How Many Toxic Sites in New Zealand?

Posted by te2ataria on October 10, 2009

sent by a reader

Have you ever wondered how many toxic sites are out there, or whether your home, office/shop, school, hospital… are built on one?

According to our contact in the government, “pious pakeha 1,” there are probably as many as 130,000 contaminated sites in the country.

“[T]he number of potentially contaminated rural sites has not been formally assessed, there may be as many as 1,000 storage and dump sites containing unwanted pesticides and herbicides and a further 1,000 private and farm landfills (Ministry for the Environment, 1992b). New Zealand may also have several thousand contaminated sheep and cattle dip sites if the Australian example is any guide. A large number of Australian dip sites that were used before 1965 have high DDT and arsenic concentrations.” [36] (emphasis added) …” a  report said.

Take Hawke’s Bay, for example. It took 14 years and a ruling by the ombudsman’s office, before Hawke’s Bay Regional Council would release a partial list of contaminated sites in Hawke’s Bay. That’s right, 14 years.

Where are these sites located?

The list is very telling, but it’s by no means complete. It “includes schools, the old Napier Hospital, agricultural contractors, hotels, transport operators, garages, retailers, dry cleaners, tanneries and old landfills. Many activities are still operating but some have become residential sites.”

The council had originally destroyed the details, or hadn’t registered them at all. “The list, compiled for the council in 1995 by Worley Consultants using a broad desktop study that drew on phone book data from as far back as the 1930s, originally contained 3102 sites.”

Dominion Post said:

Following the ombudsman’s ruling in August, council staff began investigating (!) sites on the list and ruled many out, narrowing the list down to 1494 sites.

The Report added:

Until now landowners had never been informed their property was on the list. The council had said it believed property values could be affected … “

Severe weather warning for much of New Zealand

Posted by te2ataria on July 22, 2009

New Zealand MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the much of the country

Heavy rain is forecast for Westland, Fiordland and Mt Taranaki, before moving north Thursday, a forecaster said.

Up to 150mm of rain was predicted for Westland, Fiordland and Mt Taranaki, he said.

Heavy rain is also expected “in the northwest of the South Island and North Island high country from the Tararua Ranges to Waikato could expect up to 100mm of rain.”

People living in those areas should look out for rapidly rising rivers.

“Severe gales were also predicted for eastern areas from Marlborough to Hawke’s Bay, including Wellington.”

“These winds have the potential to bring down tree and powerlines, and make driving difficult, especially for motorcycles and high sided vehicles,” forecastrs said.

Visitor Health Warning: Elevated Risk of Leptospirosis Infection in New Zealand

Posted by te2ataria on June 25, 2008

New Zealand Deadly Infections Syndrome (NZDIS), Health Bulletin # 14. Elevated Risk of Human Leptospirosis Infection June 25, 2008

New Zealand: KEEP OUT!

New Zealand has the highest rates of human leptospirosis in the developed world, according to a new study.

The disease, which is passed to humans through the urine of sheep, cattle, pigs, rodents and deer, attacks the kidneys and liver and can cause death.

Meat workers, inspectors, farmers and veterinarians are among the most common occupationally exposed groups.

A meat worker died from the disease, and an increase in the number of cases of leptospirosis in meat workers in Hawke’s Bay has been reported.

Massey University’s veterinarian Jackie Benschop said in the last 20 years there had been a big push to vaccinate dairy cattle and pigs against leptospirosis, but exposure from deer, beef cattle and sheep was also high.

“Our results add weight to the hypothesis that sheep are an important source of leptospiral infections to humans.” (Source)

This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicts a number of Leptospira sp. bacteria atop a 0.1. µm polycarbonate filter. Leptospires are long, thin motile spirochetes that may be free-living or associated with animal hosts and survive well in fresh water, soil, and mud in tropical areas. Organisms are antigenically complex, with over 200 known pathogenic serologic variants. Molecular taxonomic studies at CDC and elsewhere have identified 13 named and 4 unnamed species of pathogenic leptospires. Leptospirosis causes a wide range of symptoms, and some infected persons may have no symptoms at all. Symptoms of leptospirosis include high fever, severe headache, chills, muscle aches, and vomiting, and may include jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), red eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or a rash. Leptospirosis Data

  • In New Zealand meat workers are one of the occupations most at risk of contracting leptospirosis, comprising 30 percent of notifications in 2006
  • Infection can result in severe illness and in some cases death.
  • During 2003-2005 leptospirosis resulted in 207 hospitalisations
  • The majority of cases of leptospirosis are relatively mild and may be misdiagnosed as influenza.
  • The true incidence of leptospirosis is probably many times the reported incidence.
  • Leptospira species have many animal hosts including the main livestock species, wildlife and rodents.
  • An NZ slaughterhouse survey in lambs found 59 percent of lines had one or more carcasses with antibodies to two of the strains of leptospirosis – hardjo-bovis or pomona.
  • Leptospirosis occurs more frequently in humans in NZ than in any other country where it is notifiable.
  • Beef herds exposure to hardjo-bovis and pomona is high with prevalence estimates over 50 percent for serovar hardjo-bovis.
  • A survey of 110 deer farms found hardjo-bovis was present on 61 percent.
  • A slaughter-house survey in lambs found 49 percent of lines had one or more carcasses with titres to either hardjo-bovis, pomona or both
  • There is evidence that clinical disease in sheep and deer is emerging with morbidity and mortality in lambs and weaners. (Source)
