No future for many young Kiwis: Six suspected suicides in Kaitaia since mid-May, five recently

Kaitaia township is the last major settlement on the way to the Far North. Many in the small community of about 5,000 feel “there is no future”.

“There are feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. There are feeling that there is no future … People are fighting for their lives”, says community leader Ricky Houghton.

The community is struggling with feelings of blame after deaths of the six, aged between 17 and 25, Houghton says.

“Kaitaia is known as the murder capital of New Zealand and locals desperately don’t want to add ‘suicide capital’ to the mantle,” said a report.

Five young males have died suddenly in Kaitaia in the past 12 weeks: Police

Police have confirmed at least five young males aged between 17 and 25 have “died suddenly” in Kaitaia since late May.

A spokeswoman said all were “sudden death incidents which we have attended, where our investigations lead us to believe the person has taken their own life”.

“We pass our investigation findings to the Coroner, who will ultimately make a ruling as to how a death has occurred,” she said.

Community leader Ricky Houghton of He Korowai Trust said earlier today that the five deaths reflected “a community in crisis”.

“The people are feeling doomed. There’s a sense of hopelessness and helplessness of the young people,” he said.

NZ Govt launches water supply inquiry after thousands fall sick

“The New Zealand government launched an inquiry on Thursday into the contamination of a regional water supply that has left thousands of people sick with vomiting and diarrhoea” said a report.

The outbreak of campylobacter bacteria, an acute form of gastroenteritis, has sickened around 3,000 people, prompting the government to officials said.

About half of those are in the town of Havelock North on New Zealand’s North Island, about 250 km (155 miles) northeast of the capital Wellington, where schools have been closed and medical facilities overloaded.

“The situation in Havelock North is concerning,” Minister for Health Jonathan Coleman said in a statement. “It is important that the public has confidence in their water supply.”

“New Zealand [deceptively] touts its clean, green image abroad under a ‘100 percent pure [manure]’ campaign to attract tourists, as well as to highlight its food and water safety as a hallmark of its premium [tainted] export products.”

Gastro outbreak: Mushroom farm linked to previous water contamination
“In October last year, E. coli was found in a well at the Brookvale borefield, which draws water from the Te Mata aquifer, providing all of Havelock North’s water.”
