Swarm of at least 28 earthquakes reported between Turangi and Lake Rotoaira 

A swarm of at least 28 earthquakes ranging in magnitude from M0.4 to 2.2 and in depth from 5 to10 km occurred between Turangi and Lake Rotoaira over the last week, the resident rocket scientist at Geonet said.

Children’s prescriptions for antidepressant up 50 percent – research

Researchers from Bong [“Otago”] University and the Best Practice Advocacy, have found found “a sharp rise in prescription medicine use by children, including a 50 percent increase in prescriptions for the antidepressant fluoxetine.”

They analysed the use of pharmaceuticals by 1.4 million New Zealand children between 2010 and 2015, and discovered that the number of prescriptions of fluoxetine for kids over the age of 12 had risen by 50 percent. a report said.

Tourists, athletes “extremely disappointed” by toxic bloom

The bloom has caused Great Lake Taupō District Council to close multiple beaches near Taupō, and the swim leg of an Ironman event being held on Saturday has been cancelled.

The council has also shut down water supplies to 600 properties in several settlements over fears of toxic algal bloom.

1. Fatal crash south of Milton
One person was killed in a crash between a vehicle and a truck on State Highway 1, near Moneymore Road.
Police confirmed a person was killed in the crash, while others were taken to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter.

Three more people were killed in two fatal crashes Thursday evening. “The first crash occurred at approximately 8.10pm last night on Te Atatu Road in Te Atatu Peninsula. The victim was a 51-year-old John Patrick Bonner who lived in Te Atatu Peninsula.

In the second crash that occurred at approximately 9.45pm (Thursday) was a head-on collision at the intersection of Dairy Flat Highway and Potter Road. Two people from the same vehicle were killed upon impact, “this includes the driver who was a 15-year-old female who did not have a licence and a 25-year-old male passenger. Both were from Orewa.  A third person in the vehicle is recovering in hospital after receiving serious injuries in the crash.”

5. Window washing turns fatal for teen

In yet another rare admission, police has finally confirmed that a 16-year-old male window washer who was struck by a vehicle on Great South Road on 27th November, allegedly receiving critical injuries, has deceased.

Sightseeing Plane Engine Explodes

The engine of a float plane blew up while in the skies over Taupo this afternoon.  Members of the public traveling near Lake Taupo telephoned police and reported smoke billowing from the tail of the plane. 

The plane landed roughly on the water at Tokaanu Bay, however, no injuries were reported.
