Boston University students Daniela Rosanna Lekhno, Roch Jauberty and Austin Brashears, aged 20 to 21, were horrifically killed on Saturday when their vehicle went out of control on State Highway 46 and rolled 3 times near Rangipo, 10km south of Turangi, in the North Island.

Five other students were injured in the crash.  Margaret Theriault, 21, who was studying in Sydney, remains in a critical condition in intensive care at Waikato Hospital.

“The students were just over a month away from finishing their exchange studies at Auckland University and wanted to see where the Lord of the Rings was filmed,” according to a report.

“While the details of this crash are still sketchy, it appears that poor road design has contributed to this tragedy,” said safety campaigner Clive Matthew-Wilson.

Two other women, Alys McAlpine and Kathy Moldawer, aged 20 and 21, remain in Rotorua Hospital in a stable condition, while Stephen Houseman, 20, and Emily Melton, also 20, were treated at the Taupo Hospital emergency department and later discharged.

All of the students except the woman in a critical condition were enrolled in a Boston University study abroad program in Auckland, says Bernd Widdig, executive director of BU’s study abroad programs,

On average, 3 foreigners are murdered/killed in New Zealand every 4 days.
