Young victim in a coma because of police pursuit?

Was police chasing “hit-and-run driver” when victim was hit?

A 61-year-old driver has been arrested over an alleged hit-and-run in Whanganui early this morning. The victim, Jesse Minnell, 24, was said to be in a critical/ serious condition.

How Did the Crash Happen?

Police have alleged that they were dealing with a pub fight outside the Red Lion Inn on Anzac Parade when a car swerved into the crowd and hit 24-year-old Jesse Minnell, around 2.20am. However, the nearby residents had heard nothing about the alleged brawl.

The driver is said to have left the scene in a late-model dark-blue BMW, without the police, or anyone else, noticing the licence plates!!

“Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong said earlier that, while police had been at the scene at the time, they did not manage to get a licence plate number for the offending car.”

Mr Minnell’s mother and father were with him in the hospital, where they said he had been in an induced coma with bleeding in two parts of the brain.

He was earlier described as being in a critical condition.

Family friend Des Attwell told RNZ he thought the officers at the scene should have been able to get the licence plate number.

“Just sounds like very poor training to me. I mean, it’s seems like a simple procedure – if you’re pursuing a car, what’s the first thing you do? See what the number plate is, call it in. It seems somewhat remiss.”

The police were not responding to Mr Attwell’s criticism, but confirmed officers were being questioned as witnesses.

What Pub Brawl???

A manager at the Red Lion Inn said they did not want to comment.

Mike Woodhead, the owner-operator at a nearby Four Square supermarket, said he had been talking to a witness who was “shaken” from the incident.

Woodhead arrived at work at 4.45am on Saturday to find Anzac Parade had been closed off. “There were no police. It was just the security and the road workers closing the road.”

While serving customers in the morning, Woodhead said he talked to a person who witnessed the events outside the Red Lion Inn.

“I know one guy who saw it and he was a bit upset by it all. He was a bit shaken up.”

He said most neighbours he had talked to in the area had not heard any commotion during the early hours of the morning.

Posted by te2ataria on January 31, 2016

SHAME ON YOU, CALLOUS ASSASSINS!

Police pursuits: 3 teens killed, one in a coma, 3 others seriously injured… all in one week!

Two boys aged 14 or 15 were killed after the car they were in crashed during yet another police pursuit, in Masterton early on Sunday.

Hoani Korewha (left), 15, and Pacer Willacy-Scott (right), 14, were killed in Masterton during a police pursuit Sunday morning.

Two other occupants of the car, also aged 14 and 15, received serious injuries.

Masterton mayor Lyn Patterson said Wairarapa was a small community so everyone would likely know one or more of the victims.

“It’s a real tragedy that the Wairarapa has lost two young people. My condolences to the two young people’s families.”http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/76423847/Eerie-silence-after-teens-die-in-crash-following-police-pursuit-in-Masterton

The chances are, if Wairarapa wasn’t such a small community, police wouldn’t have even reported the fatalities.

Barely a week ago, Eden Nathan, 16, was murdered as a result of the police chase in the suburb of Mangere. The alleged driver of the stolen car, a 15-year-old girl, was critically injured and remains in a coma.

The excuse this time?

Hot air balloon festival will go ahead, if for no other reason than a tribute to those who’ve died: Carterton Mayor

The mayor of Carterton says the region’s annual hot air balloon festival will go ahead, despite yesterday’s tragedy.

Police hope to release the names of all 11 victims of the crash this afternoon.

The four-day Balloons over Wairarapa festival is due to be held in March in Masterton.

The pilot of the balloon that crashed, Lance Hopping, was a safety officer for the festival.

[Would the festival be safer without a safety officer?]

Ron Mark says there’s some uncertainty among people in Carterton about whether the festival should go ahead.

But he says there’s an overwhelming expectation for the balloons to fly in March, if for no other reason than a tribute to those who’ve died. (Newstalk ZB)
