Police UPDATE: Atiamuri crash

Police have confirmed eight people were killed in the two-vehicle crash between a van and SUV on on Ohakuri Road this morning.

“The driver of the SUV (the sole occupant of that vehicle), and the driver and six passengers in the van were killed,” police said.

“One passenger in the van, a child, was critically injured and was air-lifted to Waikato Hospital.”

At least eight people killed, boy critically injured in ‘catastrophic’ Taupo road carnage

Eight people are understood to have been killed, and a 9-yo boy critically injured in a two-vehicle crash about 30km north of Taupō in the central North Island, NZ.

At least one person had received critical injuries and was air-lifted to hospital this morning, police reported.

It was unclear how many people have been killed due to the catastrophic nature of the crash, police added earlier.

The Disaster Victim Identification team (DVI) have been called in to assist with the investigation.

It’s unclear at this stage if any of the victims were foreign visitors.

Serious crash, SH1 Atiamuri – UPDATE 3

Police can confirm that there have been multiple fatalities following the crash near Ohakuri Road this morning.

An SUV and a van have collided and a significant amount of debris has been strewn all over the road.

At the moment it is unclear how many people have been killed due to the catastrophic nature of the crash and therefore it will take some time for emergency services to establish exactly how many people have been involved in the crash.

The Disaster Victim Identification team (DVI) have been called in to assist with the investigation.

At least one person suffering critical injuries was air-lifted to hospital this morning.”

Catastrophic head-on collision between van and SUV

A van and SUV collided and a significant amount of debris has been strewn all over the road, police reported.

“It appears, for whatever reason, one of the vehicles has crossed the incorrect side of the road on a moderate bend,” Inspector Brent Crowe told media.

“To describe the scene behind us as a complete tragedy would be an understatement.”

“Our main priority, our main focus at the moment is to ensure we extract the deceased, look after the deceased and take care of them for their families,” he said.

Stuff reported:

The crash comes less than a month after five family members [including three schoolgirls] were killed on Tirohanga Rd, about 15 kilometres away.

A west-bound Ford Falcon had crashed into a gum tree tree, killing all occupants, except 11-year-old Isaac Morgan-Rangikataua, who was seriously injured.

His father, cousin and three school-age sisters all died at the scene.

Bad Stretch of Road

Fiona Mead, a Rotorua resident, who has been driven by her son along SH 1 in Atiamuri regularly told the Rotorua Daily Post that the “ground zero” was a “bad stretch of road”.

Some of the corners are blind, and the right-hand turns were particularly treacherous. “You have to be quick because the cars come quickly.”

Shontel Van Zyderveld,  another local, said she previously used the highway “all the time”.

“But since these accidents, I haven’t used it once. There has just been so much tragedy on that highway, I’m really not willing to use it at the moment.”

“I can never recall so many fatal accidents happening in such a short space of time in that area (South Waikato, Atiamuri, Tokoroa),” a former resident said.

“Police National Dive Squad has now located a vehicle believed to have left the Maungatapu Bridge, State Highway 29A near Tauranga, yesterday evening, 27 April.
“The driver’s body has also been located inside the vehicle.
“The road between Maungatapu and the Baypark roundabout remains closed, and will likely remain closed for a number of hours while the vehicle is recovered.”

“The two-vehicle crash happened at the intersection of Rangitata-Orari Bridge Highway and Orari-Rangitata Highway (SH 79 and SH 1) shortly before 9:30am.
“Two people in one of the vehicles were trapped for a time, and are in critical condition.
“A helicopter was called to transport the pair to hospital.”

Kaipara Harbour boat disaster: Seven dead, one missing from Francie charter rust bucket

Seven people were killed and one is missing presumed dead after the boat capsized as it tried to enter Kaipara Harbour on Saturday after a fishing charter.

Boat’s owner Bill McNatty was among the dead, while all the others aboard were Pacific Islander males aged between 31 and 59, including four people from Tonga, one from Samoa and one from the Cook Islands, police said on Sunday.

Six people were originally rescued according to police bulletin Update #3 posted online on Saturday, 26 November 2016 at 6:22pm. However, three of the injured had died by 8:07pm, when police posted its Update #5.

A number of people have died after a boat got into difficulty in Kaipara Harbour this afternoon.

At least six other people have been rescued and are receiving medical treatment.

Four aircraft continue to search for people in the water; three helicopters and a plane.

Update #2 has since been removed.

At 6:37pm there are still 6 people alive, according to police bulletin Update #4.

Police are appealing to boaties and pilots to steer clear of the Kaipara Harbour area while a rescue operation is conducted.

Emergency services require a safe working space around South Head.

A number of people have died after a boat got into difficulty in Kaipara Harbour this afternoon.

At least six other people have been rescued and are receiving medical treatment.

Four aircraft continue to search for people in the water; three helicopters and a plane.

At this stage Police are unable to specify how many people have died.

By 8:07pm, some of the victims, who were rescued alive, had died from various injuries, according to the most logical interpretation of the police bulletin Update #5.

Helicopters, including the Police Eagle helicopter, are continuing to search Kaipara Harbour after a boat got into difficulty.

Emergency services have been told that 11 people were on the vessel.

Although at this stage Police are unable to confirm figures, there are a number of fatalities.

The bodies of five people have been recovered from Kaipara Harbour following a maritime rescue operation today.

The operation follows a report to emergency services at about 3.30pm that a vessel was overdue.

Three other people have been rescued and are in hospital.

A search for a further three people will continue.

Police have been told that 11 people were on the boat.

Pregnant Dome Valley car crash victim in serious condition
A 40-year-old pregnant woman critically injured in a car crash on Friday is now in a serious condition in hospital. Two others are in a stable condition. The three victims were trapped in their vehicles after the crash and had to be freed by fire crews.
