New Zealand Rivers are National Shame

Water quality should be a massive issue this election
“A toxic algae that can kill animals within half an hour claimed the poor thing’s life and the [Tukituki] river joined the long list of others that weren’t swimmable…”

Forget clean and green [tourist deception] – this Wellington stream is brown, bubbly and litter-strewn
“As Jane Poata walks beside Wellington’s Owhiro Stream, the toxic stench rekindles childhood memories of holidaying beside New Zealand’s most-contaminated site. It is a metallic smell she described as ammonia and lime, rising from the brown and bubbly stream, a tributary of which passes through T&T Landfills before running behind a primary school and homes then into Taputeranga Marine Reserve off the capital’s south coast.”

The sad state of our 100% pure, crunchy, yellowish green water…

Posted by te2ataria on January 23, 2016

NZ WATERS ARE MAJOR SOURCES OF DISEASE AND DEATH

Canterbury artist protesting at the “sad state” of the Selwyn River

Canterbury artist Mike Glover, of Springston, has designed a “protest sign” aimed at the Selwyn District Council to take action on improving Selwyn’s heavily polluted waters.

“With high E.coli levels and toxic algae warnings, it is tough to find a safe spot to have a dip in Selwyn this summer, Glover said. The water quality grading of the Selwyn River at the Upper Selwyn Huts has been ‘very poor’ for years,” he said. http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/mid-canterbury-selwyn/76145756/pointed-protest-over-selwyn-river-water-quality

“As a local resident and ratepayer I’ve looked at the ‘Temporary Health Warning’ sign here for many years.”

Glover’s 10-year-old daughter cannot swim at the river, because swimming is not permitted there.

“A whole generation of kids is growing up thinking the swimming pool is the place to swim as the river is too polluted,” he said.

“The temporary health warning sign is older than my girl and… [it] is an insult to the people who live here, pay their rates and deserve better.”

“The water quality in the lower Selwyn River – from Coes Ford down – is affected by intensive land use. Recent rule changes and the collaborative measures of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy are leading to improved land management in the area and we expect to see improved water quality as a result of this,” said ECan’s senior surface water science manager Tim Davie

Selwyn District Council David Ward told Stuff the river was not a council issue. [comes under  divine jurisdiction, perhaps?]

Surely, the water in Marlborough Sounds is 100% pure and green?

Marlborough Sounds shellfish: one bite on the fish and you are a vegetable!
The Ministry for Primary Industries has issued a public health warning after routine tests of shellfish samples at Onapua Bay, in the Tory Channel, showed unsafe levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning.

Mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, catseyes, kina and all other bivalve shellfish should not be eaten.

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning could cause symptoms between 10 minutes and three hours after eating, the warning said.

Symptoms could include numbness and tingling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, paralysis, respiratory failure, and in severe cases, death.
