Young victim in a coma because of police pursuit?

Was police chasing “hit-and-run driver” when victim was hit?

A 61-year-old driver has been arrested over an alleged hit-and-run in Whanganui early this morning. The victim, Jesse Minnell, 24, was said to be in a critical/ serious condition.

How Did the Crash Happen?

Police have alleged that they were dealing with a pub fight outside the Red Lion Inn on Anzac Parade when a car swerved into the crowd and hit 24-year-old Jesse Minnell, around 2.20am. However, the nearby residents had heard nothing about the alleged brawl.

The driver is said to have left the scene in a late-model dark-blue BMW, without the police, or anyone else, noticing the licence plates!!

“Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong said earlier that, while police had been at the scene at the time, they did not manage to get a licence plate number for the offending car.”

Mr Minnell’s mother and father were with him in the hospital, where they said he had been in an induced coma with bleeding in two parts of the brain.

He was earlier described as being in a critical condition.

Family friend Des Attwell told RNZ he thought the officers at the scene should have been able to get the licence plate number.

“Just sounds like very poor training to me. I mean, it’s seems like a simple procedure – if you’re pursuing a car, what’s the first thing you do? See what the number plate is, call it in. It seems somewhat remiss.”

The police were not responding to Mr Attwell’s criticism, but confirmed officers were being questioned as witnesses.

What Pub Brawl???

A manager at the Red Lion Inn said they did not want to comment.

Mike Woodhead, the owner-operator at a nearby Four Square supermarket, said he had been talking to a witness who was “shaken” from the incident.

Woodhead arrived at work at 4.45am on Saturday to find Anzac Parade had been closed off. “There were no police. It was just the security and the road workers closing the road.”

While serving customers in the morning, Woodhead said he talked to a person who witnessed the events outside the Red Lion Inn.

“I know one guy who saw it and he was a bit upset by it all. He was a bit shaken up.”

He said most neighbours he had talked to in the area had not heard any commotion during the early hours of the morning.

Kiwi of the week: Dan Oliver

Posted by te2ataria on May 1, 2016

Kiwi falls “five storeys” while trying to retrieve ball thinking he was a bird

A 24-year-old drunk mechanic from Auckland, Dan Oliver, volunteered to retrieve a rugby ball after he or one of his mates had kicked the ball on to a nearby roof in Bath, England.

“We went up a flight of stairs on the outside of a building. We could see the ball was sitting in a courtyard, we had knocked on the doors of the  buildings nearby but nobody was there.

“While we were discussing how we would get down, I ended up [thinking I was a bird] …”

Oliver allegedly fell 13 metres (!), or about five storeys, landing on his back and narrowly missing a metal fence. [Never mind the physics and biology… ]

“The first thought I had was I am in a lot of pain. I was absolutely terrified.

“I couldn’t move, I couldn’t feel my legs. I was incredibly scared and in a lot of shock,” he said.

“I broke down, I started crying.”

Two specialist doctors were flown in to help ambulance staff who were trying to stabilise him at the scene, according to a report.

“Those doctors were so onto it. They saved my life.”

Oliver ended up with two fractured vertebrae, a fractured skull, brain bleeds, a compound fracture to his leg, a broken wrist and a smashed pelvis, the report said.

“It bloody hurts, it is unbelievable. I can’t stand up, I can’t move my legs. I can only wiggle my toes.

Olive had been travelling around Europe and working in London since August last year while on his big OE.

British migrant worries she might lose her house over tax bill that “blindsided” her

British migrant Alison Gordon is facing unemployment, supporting her two teenage sons on her own – and an unexpected $11,000 tax bill.

Gordon arrived from Britain in 2005 and transferred her pension to a New Zealand fund.

The Hawke’s Bay resident did not give the transfer much more thought until December, when she received a letter from Inland Revenue telling her she had to pay $11,000 in tax.

She started to ask for help, from her local MP and tax agents, and discovered that hers was not an isolated case. Inland Revenue is approaching many migrants who it believes did not pay accurate tax on their pension transfers when they moved to New Zealand.  http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/money/79405536/Migrant-says-its-not-fair-no-one-will-accept-blame-for-lax-tax-advice

Deal to boost Indian tourism signed in Auckland (!)

“The ceremony, at Auckland’s Langham Hotel, was witnessed by Prime Minister John Key and India’s President Pranab Mukherjee, who is visiting New Zealand”, according to a report.

“Our annual trade with India is worth more than $1 billion. In the year to 31 March 2016, almost 52,000 Kiwis travelled to India and close to 60,000 Indians visited New Zealand. In addition, more than 160,000 people of Indian descent live here”, said NZ’s Transport Minister.

However, he forgot to mention one minor technicality: the number of Indian visitors, students, taxi drivers and shopkeepers who are killed or go missing in New Zealand, each year.

But since neither India’s Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, nor its President read the news, they probably can’t be charged as accessories to murder.
