‘Australia had its own George Floyd moment, only it passed without international outrage’

By ABC Indigenous affairs correspondent Isabella Higgins

“The deep anguish felt after the death of George Floyd is something Indigenous communities understand all too well, except here [in Australia,] they are still waiting for their moment of international reckoning.”

The deep anguish felt after the death of George Floyd is something Indigenous communities understand all too well, except here, they are still waiting for their moment of international reckoning.

The response in the United States to the death has been enormous, thousands taking to the streets to protest against the death of black men in the custody of white police officers.

But it was even bigger than that, the social media outcry has been impossible to ignore, George Floyd’s death was noted by millions around the world.

For many it feels like a moment of awakening, of a struggle realised, but it’s a bittersweet scenario for Indigenous families where similar issues are at play but with none of the global attention.

It’s been more than 30 years since Australia started interrogating its own problem with Indigenous deaths in custody, but it’s an issue that often fails to command social or political attention.

Many of the recommendations from the 1987 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody were never implemented, and it’s estimated hundreds more have died in custody since.

As Australians took to social media to denounce the events occurring in America, many Indigenous communities were left wondering where is the outcry for my family?

So does Australia have less empathy for its own deaths in custody? Or is the American influence so great that as a country we understand their race struggles better than our own?

The power of numbers

I’ve reported on many protests against Indigenous deaths in custody in Australia. The smallest was just a few dozen people, the biggest probably at best, a few hundred.

Never have I seen anything like what’s happening in the United States right now.
Thousands of people are shown with their fists in the air as they face the opposite direction to the camera.

Australia’s relatively small population is part of the reason — America’s African American population is equivalent to about 43 million people, Australia’s Indigenous population just 800,000 — but it’s a deeper problem than that.

In some ways Australia’s criminalisation of its black citizens is even more pronounced than the United States, but we don’t have music, movies and TV shows explaining it to us as regularly.

In the US, African Americans make up about 14 per cent of the population, and roughly 30 per cent of the country’s inmates.

Indigenous Australians make up 3 per cent of the population and about 30 per cent of the prison population.

We lock up Indigenous Australians at four times the rate of black Americans. It’s an even more jarring figure in the youth detention system, where about 50 per cent of all detainees are Indigenous.

It’s a crude and imperfect comparison, but it still paints a picture of our justice system.

“I can’t breathe”

One Australian case in particular that bears similarities to that of George Floyd is the 2015 death of Dunghutti man David Dungay in a Sydney prison.  [Dunngay, 26, who died in 2015 at Long Bay Jail.]

Both men died while being physically restrained by officers, and after repeatedly exclaiming “I can’t breathe.”

I remember a protest held by David Dungay’s family in Sydney. There were about 50 people there, and it received next to no media attention that day.

Not long after tens of thousands showed up to rally against Australia Day and climate change just a few blocks away.

No one has ever been charged for Dungay’s death.

The largest protest I’ve seen in Australia around deaths in custody was last year in Alice Springs, where the community was mourning the loss of a young man.
Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.

Protest march in Alice Springs

Kumanjayi Walker, a 19-year-old Walpiri man, had been allegedly shot and killed by a white police officer in his home in the remote community of Yuendumu, home to just 1000 people.

Hundreds travelled hours away from their home in the heart of Australia to sit in the Alice Springs town square and call for justice.

There is the added complexity that in Indigenous communities like this one, English isn’t a first language and there’s added cultural protocols about who can speak out on behalf of their people.

I remember a young mother at the protest rocking a baby on her hip, she told me her biggest fear was that her baby son could one day end up as a man with bullet wounds in a coffin.

The police officer was charged with murder. It’s yet to go to trial but it’ll be one of the few cases where charges were pressed in relation to deaths in custody in Australia.

After the arrest, there were just a few small vigils mourning a young man.
3000 people attended the Invasion Day march in Brisbane on Australia Day 2018, waving Indigenous flags and signs.

America is the land of celebrity, a pop-culture powerhouse of the world, and while perhaps not equitably, African Americans do have some access to that international megaphone.

Barack Obama, Beyonce, Michael Jordan, Kanye West, Oprah Winfrey. Those kinds of aspirational household names taught the world African Americans should be respected.

For decades now, rap and hip-hop music have explained to us just some of the challenges of being black in America, with complex ideas about white privilege, power imbalances, inequity, a stacked justice system, all distilled in a catchy chorus.

From Tupac — “Can barely walk the city streets … without a cop harassing me, searching me”— to Kendrick Lamar — “We hate the po-po, wanna kill us dead in the street fo sho”.

Australia has a crop of Indigenous celebrities, sports stars, musicians, actors, writers, a handful of politicians but nothing compared to America’s influencers.

In a connected world, where activism and conversations start on social media, whether right or wrong, the words of the famous can be as good as gospel.

They speak in a language people understand, they have influence and they told us the death of George Floyd is not OK and you must speak up. And Australians did.

Out of sight

In Australia these incidents often occur in remote corners of the country, foreign to most of us, while most African-Americans police shootings occur in big cities.

Would the nation’s understanding about what happened during the 2004 Palm Island riots be any clearer if it happened in a major city?

An Aboriginal man died in custody, it sparked fierce riots, the officer in charge was acquitted of manslaughter, then 12 years later in a civil case, the Federal Court determined the police actions were racist.

Where there are lots of people, there is a media presence, then there is public scrutiny, that leads to accountability. When terrible things happen in remote areas, they too easily slip under the radar.

As a regional reporter, some years ago I recall a riot breaking out in Woorabinda, a small central Queensland community.

A pregnant Indigenous woman had accused police of throwing her to the ground and mishandling her during a routine seatbelt check.

The town of about 900 people was furious at the police, they rioted for days, there were a few local reports after the fact, but for the most part the incident barely made it to public consciousness.

The incident was investigated by the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission, but there was no follow up on the outcome.

If issues happen out of the sight of most Australians, out of sight of our social media feeds, it is easy to ignore them.

But America can tell you it’ll take more than social media activism, memes about racism and protests to dismantle institutional racism.

America might have worldwide attention, all the power and influence of celebrity, and even a black president for eight years, but just like Australia, its justice problems are not going away.

Q. How much is life of tourist cash cow worth in NZ?

Posted by te2ataria on February 3, 2020

A. Not much, judging by how often and how easily their lives are put in jeopardy every day while visiting this country, especially after they’ve paid for their flights and accommodation and booked a few local tours!!

PS.  P2 Steers go for about NZ$1,600.

“State of emergency declared as 382 tourists and staff trapped at Milford”

A state of emergency has been declared in Fiordland after flooding cut off State Highway 94, the only road out of Milford Sound, leaving 382 tourists and workers stranded.

Hundreds of people “will spend the night trapped in Milford Sound after torrential rain caused slips and flooding, closing the only route in and out,” a report said.

“There is extensive damage from Lake Gunn to the Homer Tunnel, which will delay us opening this road quickly, and there is still a section we haven’t inspected due to bad weather preventing a flyover,” NZ Transport Agency journey manager Peter Brown said.

Psycho kids train in violent racism, ensure steady supply of recruits for NZ military

Posted by te2ataria on January 14, 2020

Foreword: It would be extremely difficult to brainwash ordinary kids from ordinary families and send them half way across the world to kill “ragheads” and rape their wives and children.

However, if you have a predisposition to racially abuse  your peers and the playground training to go with that…

Young Fijian-Indian girl racially abused, had dog faeces smeared on her face

A 9-year-old half Fijian-Indian girl was attacked by a group of children who put dog faeces on her face and threatened to shoot her with a fake gun at Navy Park in South Dunedin on Sunday.

Do all white families stationed in Dunedin teach their kids to racially abused dark-skinned kids and smear dog shit on their faces? Probably not!

But clearly, many families do! There were 7-9 kids in the park, all of whom participated in the racial assault episode.

The kid’s mother, Zahra Muhammed, who moved from Canada to New Zealand in 2009–she probably thought NZ was a less racist country than Canada–has experienced other episodes of racial abuse in NZ. [Zahra is Caucasian and wears a headscarf for religious reasons.]

“In 2016, Muhammed said she and her children were told by the owner of the charity shop in Oamaru her “sort” weren’t welcome,” a report said.

Her three children where accused of stealing and she was told to “**** off back to India, get out of here! You’re banned we don’t want your sort here.”

“We’ve had the odd thing where people will drive by and call us a terrorist or we had this homeless guy called me Osama Bin Laden.”

Revisiting some of the readers’ comments…

Posted by te2ataria on August 10, 2019

I am 48 yr old 8th generation Kiwi with 4 children. I have travelled much of the world through my business and holidays (including the entire NZ many times), and I can assure you over the past 20 years NZ has become a very dangerous place to what it used to be. I tend to take my holidays overseas because of the fear of threats and a feeling of being made to feel unwelcome etc. Once my children have all left home were OFF. The whole world is become a less safe place, but NZ has changed a lot quicker and to a bigger extreme than anywhere else

I was born in Hong Kong and studied in NZ. There’s too much discrimination against Asian students in your country. New Zealand is a pretty racist country to be honest. Speaking from experience.
Most Asians I met there have been verbally abused when walking down the street. This is very common even in the major cities like Auckland.

I have observed in areas where the land spirits are angered (and not just in new zealand but everywhere) that an angry humming or drumming or some other noise can be heard by sensitive ears. I have heard it myself.

I read an article called Why Kiwi Leaders Get Less Respect Than Their Overseas Counterparts. Basically, they drag down authority reactively, for the sake of it, because they cannot abide the existence of any hierarchy, even a meritocracy. In the article, Brad Jackson, the Fletcher Building Education Trust professor of leadership, referred to a project called the GLOBE project, which shed some light on the internal workings of NZ society: how they get things done and what stops them from getting things done. How to “manoeuvre through” the crabs in a barrel mentality by making slow lateral moves, and not sticking your neck out where it can be chopped off.

He concluded, “Leaders in New Zealand should know what they’re getting themselves into. If you can influence individuals here, you’re doing very well indeed.”

Looking at court decisions, it’s clear that Jackson knows what he is talking about, because these decisions often seem to have no objective grounds. The criteria must therefore be subjective. Arse-covering, favour-mongering and palm greasing.

You cannot run a modern economy on any of these conditions.”

Police Road Fatality Reports [Extreme Censorship is in Effect for Tourism and Commercial Reasons]

Road Fatalities and Police Censorship

Both the actual number of road fatalities and cases of statistical resurrections performed by the Ministry of Transport (MoT) over the September 22-24 weekend remain UNKNOWN.

No. of dead people resurrected by MoT on Sept. 26, 2017 : at least ONE

  • At least FIVE, possibly as many as SEVEN, people were killed in serious crashes on Wednesday, August 23, according to a informed source, but only three fatalities were reported by police.
  • On Monday, August 28, police reported at least THREE road fatalities. All three victims seem to have been statistically resurrected by the Ministry of Truth (Minitru).
  • At least nine road fatalities occurred over the weekend (September 1 – 2), according to reliable insider information. However, only four of the deaths were reported by police, and of those, just three recorded by the Ministry of Transport.
  • Between September 18 and 21, 2017 at least SIX road fatality victims were resurrected by MOT.

Of an estimated 2,000 people who have received near-fatal/critical/serious injuries on New Zealand roads so far this year, only a couple have perished, according to NZ police reports, or lack thereof.

Welcome to the World’s Deadliest Tourist Destination – Truth about NZ Deadly Roads, as We Know it:

  • Based on insider information, statistical models and local news, we believe about 900 people were killed and more than 8,000 others seriously/critically injured on NZ suicide roads in 2016; however, only 328 fatalities were reported last year. [For every 12 or so victims, who die later in a hospital, only one death is reported. See blog content.]
  • To protect the tourist industry and massive foreign investment, about two out of every three road fatalities go unreported, or the dead are statistically resurrected by NZ government.

The Most Heavily Censored Blog in New Zealand [Watch Out for Ceaseless Swarms and Immense Tsunamis of Bad Karma, Mister Ingrish!!]

For the past 11 years, this blog has been heavily filtered by New Zealand Govt and the Internet mafia for commercial and political reasons.

It’s also been completely banned in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, India… in order to keep the would-be visitors and students in the dark about the perils of visiting New Zealand.

Who exactly must NZ government be conspiring with to be able to impose this level of censorship, with blanket suppression of information?

WHY is Govt NOT helping Asian victims of violent crimes in NZ?

YOUR life and livelihood is at risk IF you’re a tourist, a foreign student, or a shopkeeper from a “yellow”, “brown”, “black”… country.

“There’s not a lot of respect for shopkeepers generally, but there is a target towards Asian shopkeepers, Chinese, Indian, different Asian ethnicities…,” said the President of the New Zealand Chinese Association and Gisborne [show-case] Mayor, Meng Foon.

New Zealand, S. Sudanese migrants to Australia treated like sh*t

Posted by te2ataria on August 24, 2016

Sent by a reader in Oz

Half of New Zealanders starting a new life in Australia have experienced racism or discrimination

New Zealanders and South Sudanese migrants to Australia feel they are more discriminated against among all migrant groups, according to a survey of more than 10,000 people.

Migrants feel less optimistic the longer they stay in Australia, the report has found.

Australians going to New Zealand do qualify for full citizenship, but if you come the other way, you don’t.

“New Zealanders who come here can come by their passport, but the consequence of that is there are some benefits that they don’t get,” said Professor Markus of Monash University.

Professor Andrew Markus said many New Zealanders, who hold Special Category Visas, feel they are given a “harsh deal” in Australia because they can live and work here but are not eligible to vote, receive welfare, or other benefits.

“At one level they should know what they’re getting themselves into because it’s very clearly explained to them,” he said.

“Nonetheless people feel resentment having worked in this country for years, paid their taxes, contributed to the community and then having difficulties and not being able to get Centrelink benefits.  [See Australians Today report.]

“They also resent the fact that an Australian going to New Zealand does qualify for full citizenship but if you come the other way, you don’t.”

More than 200,000 New Zealanders on these visas, can’t get any help from Centrelink, it’s hard for kids going to university to get HECS, and they don’t get to vote, says the report.

“Both New Zealand and South Sudanese migrants also reported low levels of trust, with Kiwis holding a very little trust in political parties (10 per cent) and the South Sudanese reporting the lowest level of trust in the police (24 per cent) out of any other group.”

“Migrants from South Sudan bear the brunt of discrimination, with the report’s author Professor Andrew Markus describing the level of colour prejudice towards them as ‘off the scale'”.

[The second edition of this report, originally published by abc.net.au on Tuesday, has been heavily redacted and partially censored.]

New Zealand Openly Discriminates Against Asians

Posted by te2ataria on April 3, 2010

Asians Must Lose Identity to Get a Job Interview

Today, Asians Are Changing Their Names; Tomorrow they’ll have to Bleach Their Skin Just to Get a Job Interview

And so what if they got a job interview, they’ll never be offered a proper job!

The rate of unemployment among Asians in apartheid New Zealand is about twice as high as that of the white population.

“Massey University researcher Paul Spoonley says New Zealand employers, especially in small and medium-sized businesses, tend to eliminate Asian applicants very early in the process through surname discrimination.” NZHerald said.

“We have a lot of research and anecdotal evidence that New Zealand employers are reluctant to employ Asians, so changing surnames is a novel way of getting a CV read,” Spoonley said.

Asian immigrants told the Weekend Herald they changed their names in a desperate attempt to find work.

Anti-Asian discrimination is significant among New Zealand employers, according to the findings of a University of Auckland School of Business survey conducted in 2005. found.

Having a Chinese or Indian name significantly increased chances of being considered unsuitable, the survey found.

Asian immigrants told the Weekend Herald they changed their names in a desperate attempt to find work.

In the last 12 months 2029 immigrants registered to change their names including 264 Chinese, 152 Indians, 98 Iraqis and 97 Malaysians, Herald reported

A Chinese university graduate officially changed her name to Brenda Jones just to get a job interview. She did so because she couldn’t land a single job interview, while  her former classmates, white New Zealanders who graduated from the same IT course, were getting employed.

I was feeling very desperate and very small. Changing my name is not something I am proud of doing, but I really didn’t know what else to do.

New Zealand’s Internal Affairs [Gestapo] says only New Zealand citizens or permanent residents with indefinite visas can register for an official name change.

What is the Race Relations Commissioner, Joris de Bres, doing about the blatant apartheid in New Zealand? With his head still stuck between his legs,  he probably thinks the discrimination is not as bad as it was in South Africa.

Google Censorship is a Flagrant Violation of Our Freedom of Speech!

Freedom of speech is being able to speak freely without censorship. The United States Constitution protects opinions under inalienable 1st Amendment free speech rights.

The right to freedom of speech is also guaranteed under international law through numerous human-rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

How much longer is Google allowed to continue its censorship in violation of the United States Constitution and the international law?

New Zealand Racist Storm Worse Than China Quake

Octogenarian Chinese Woman Bashed to Death

Was she mistaken for a Japanese? Would that be a plausible defense in the racist, corrupt New Zealand Courts?

Deceased: Yin Ping Yang, 80, was fatally attacked at her home. She was the second of three Asians murdered in Auckland, New Zealand, the Valley of Death, in one week.

Yin Ping Yang, an 80-year-old Chinese woman, who was viciously attacked by intruder(s) in her Auckland home Wednesday (June 11, 2008), died from internal injuries Saturday.

She may have escaped the fury of China quake, but the frail old grandma was no match for New Zealand’s racist storm!

Police detective inspector said the victim had received broken ribs, internal and serious head injuries in the attack and was in a critical condition when she was taken to Middlemore Hospital where she died Saturday. She was not believed to have been sexually violated, police said. [Isn’t that (a) amazing (!), and (b) a relief to her son and grand children?]
