Graduating doctors starting work with about $100K debt

Graduating medical students are starting their working life with student loan debts of about $100k, says a new University of Auckland study, which also shows the average medical student debt has increased by $20,000 in the last 10 years.

“This kind of high level of debt is obviously particularly worrying if you don’t have the kind of confidence that you’ll be able to pay that back and of course people who come from wealthier backgrounds are likely to be more confident that they’ll be able to pay back that debt,” said Medical Students Association president.

Bus drivers in the sky:  NZ’s pilot numbers continue to fall

Civil Aviation Authority data show the number of sky bus drivers in commercial and air transport it approved fell by almost a half, from 709 to 386, between 2009 and 2016.

Entry-level pilots are required to clock at least 1,500 hours of flying.

“You could be talking about a two-year course with a six-figure student loan, and you are probably employable at not too far above the minimum wage as a very inexperienced, low-hours instructor,” said the president of Flying New Zealand.

The Environmental Silver Lining

A University of North Dakota study predicts a global shortage of about 15,000 pilots by 2026.

Laboratory tests by MPI confirm presence of plant fungus in Te Puke, Bay of Plenty [of Death]

The infection has been found in a 25-year-old ramarama plant in a private residential garden, said Myrtle rust response Incident Controller David Yard, who called the new find “very disappointing.”

“We had thought that the incursion could be contained to the small geographical area around Waitara. While it’s too early to say what the new detection will mean in terms of the ongoing operation, it’s certainly not good news in terms of its distribution in New Zealand,” he said.

“Our preliminary talks with the property owner have not found any obvious link with the situation in Taranaki or Northland, and there have been no recent nursery plant introductions to the garden. This lends weight to the possibility that this new location is a wind-borne infection.”

To date, there are 46 known infected properties in New Zealand including 4 in Northland, 2 in Waikato, 39 in Taranaki and the 1 new find in Bay of Plenty.

Yet another police pursuit in South Auckland ends in potentially deadly crash

A police spokeswoman confirmed in a statement officers followed a stolen vehicle which did a u-turn at speed on Roscommon Rd, in South Auckland, just before 1.30pm.

“The driver fled along Roscommon Rd, Wiri Station Rd, and off at Coronation Rd, where the pursuit was abandoned within several minutes [the standard poolice bullshit.]  Several minutes after that, the vehicle crashed in Mangere Town Centre on Bader Dr off-ramp into the barrier.

“Two people are in custody and are expected to face a range of charges.”

Remember this from June 1?

Police admit chasing driver for two and a half hour, despite the standard police bullshit…
A police chase that began in Tokoroa shortly after noon has ended just outside Rotorua, some 150 minutes later.
