It’s time for a Government

Sick and tired of slumlords denying you the most basic human rights?

[John Key and his clique] need to stop joking about homelessness and start building desperately needed homes, said the Green Party.

OCR: Households and businesses still held hostage to housing crisis

The National Government’s failure to fix the Auckland housing crisis continues to keep interest rates higher than they need to be, meaning families and businesses face higher than necessary costs of borrowing, the Green Party said today.

The Reserve Bank today left the Official Cash Rate unchanged at 2.25 percent despite economic conditions that favour lowering the rate, citing risks to the economy from high house prices and a lack of housing supply.

“National’s failure to fix the Auckland housing crisis is forcing the Reserve Bank to keep interest rates higher, hurting families, exporters, and jobs,” Green Party Co-leader James Shaw said.

“If National had tackled the Auckland housing crisis instead of choosing to do as little as possible, households and small businesses could be benefitting from lower interest rates right now.

Slumlords should stop joking about homelessness

At least 177 people sleeping rough within a 3-km radius of the Sky Tower, with another 51 in temporary emergency accommodation, up from 147 people last year, according to the 2016 Auckland City Street Count.

“The Government needs to stop joking about homelessness, as the Prime Minister did in Parliament today, and get on with building more houses,” Green Party social housing spokesperson Marama Davidson said.

“Families sleeping on the floor of marae, or in their cars, would be devastated to hear the Prime Minister joking about whether they’re actually homeless or if they’re just renovating their houses.

“John Key and Paula Bennett both mislead New Zealanders about homeless people not wanting help last week yet neither are prepared to apologise for the hurt they caused. And now they’re joking about homeless families.”

“Clearly, neither John Key nor Paula Bennett have any idea what life is really like for families spat out the rough end of the housing crisis, who genuinely have nowhere to live.

Govt should attack housing crisis, not families in need

National’s has failed New Zealanders on housing. Budget 2016 delivered nothing to give young families a chance to buy their own home. It slashed funding for home insulation by two-thirds. It continued John Key’s cruel policy of taking a $118m a year profit out of Housing New Zealand at the same time families are living in cars because there aren’t enough state houses.

No wonder 76 per cent of Kiwis say there is a housing crisis, and this Government has failed to fix it. Just one in four adults under 40 own their own place today. House prices are rising at 30 times the rate of inflation. 16,000 houses are year are being bought by foreign speculators. Record numbers are living in cars and garages.   http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11653530

How the average Kiwis are being ‘sodomized’ by PM and his gang

The value of an average home has increased by twice the amount an average worker earns.

  • Average price of a home in Auckland: About $1.2 million
  • House prices average annual growth ($35,000 or 8% in 2015)
  • Average income:  $44,000 (growth of 3.1% in 2015)

Housing affordability in Auckland better than in 2008, says Sick Nmith

Housing affordability is no worse in Auckland than in 2008, says Housing Minister Sick Nmith. [Which is actually true because the average family couldn’t afford to buy a house in 2008 and the average family, sure as hell, can’t afford to buy a house in 2016.]

“[About] 100 per cent of the average person’s income would be required to service their mortgage,” Dr Sick said.

Last year, the typical Auckland property earned about $230 a day – that’s twice what the average worker made in their job, or the same as an entry-level doctor or head of department teacher with responsibility for 10 staff.

“… the price growth was nearly twice the pay of an entry-level nurse and $25,000 more than a constable [earns] in his fifth year as a police officer.”

People are paying more than 70 percent of their income just for rent.
