NZ Coroner blames tourists for their deaths

Posted by te2ataria on June 21, 2012

NZ Coroners Rule No.1:  when apportioning guilt, Blame the dead because its cheaper all around and … they can’t defend themselves.

In another one of those great kiwi traditions, West Coast coroner Richard McElrea has blamed two foreign tourists, Poi May Tan, 31, of Singapore, and Yu-Ling Chen, 28, of Taiwan, for their deaths.

The victims died from head injuries and drowning when they attempted to cross the icy Waiho River, just downstream of the Franz Josef Glacier, one of NZ’s top tourist deathtraps,  on December 9, 2011.

The coroner ruled yesterday that the two victims ignored international warning signs and showed poor judgement of the dangers of alpine river crossings, according to a report.

Read between the lines:

They took a copy of a map from the backpackers where they were staying, that showed them where the walk was located.

Since the double death, details of the Roberts Point track have been removed from the map, because it did not explain how difficult the walk was. The tramp is a five-hour return trip, and it took the group four hours to reach the end.

Continue reading between the line:

Forensic pathologist Martin Sage said at the inquest in Greymouth yesterday that neither woman had alcohol in their system and had died from head injuries and drowning.

“This was terribly tragic, especially since there was a swingbridge about half an hour from where they chose to cross. Their primary decision-making was full of errors. Had they decided to spend the night in the bush, they would have been cold and uncomfortable, but all of them would still be alive.”

Get it?

Since the fatalities, DoC had proposed realigning the track where it nears the Waiho River. That was scheduled to happen over the next three months.

Mr McElrea, recommended that a new sign warning visitors should be put up at the start of the track.

“The core message from this inquiry would seem to be the dangers of crossing glacier-fed rivers,” he said.

He concluded that Ms Tan and Ms Chen drowned because of poor decision making. They underestimated the dangers of alpine river crossings and did not take into account the sign, which clearly stated they should not attempt a crossing.

Full story is posted at Drowned tourists ignored warning signs (!)

The two tourists were the 2,301st – 2,302nd foreigners to be murdered/ killed in New Zealand since January 2000.

On average, 3 foreigners are killed in New Zealand every 4 days.

A well known ‘s**thole’ indeed

Posted by te2ataria on May 27, 2012

“New Zealand is a well known s**thole

Ever wondered what other people think of New Zealand?

People think of NZ as idyllic and crime-free. It isn’t.

What you see as a tourist is very different from the reality of living there. I spent a year living and working in NZ and would honestly never go back.  – Mobile Chicane

What is weird about that.

British Tourist Killed by Angry Fish?

Posted by te2ataria on February 22, 2012

British tourist’s death not suspicious, any more than …

There’s nothing suspicious about the death of a British tourist whose body was found in the Tongariro River near Turangi on Monday, NZ police farce has said.

The body of Jeremy Norris, 45, said to be  a regular visitor to New Zealand and an avid fly fisherman, was found floating on Tongariro River.

“Suspicious death” in New Zealand police parlance has quite different meanings to what is generally understood.  It may mean that “given the circumstances,” it was not difficult to comprehend why he was killed/found dead.

Or, “people have been killed/found dead in this country in far more suspicious circumstances than this one.”

Alternatively, “scores of foreigners have lost their lives in New Zealand for far less than the latest victim did/said/implied/thought…,” or words to that effect.

The death has been referred to the Coroner together with the standard police advice as to what the cause of death MUST HAVE BEEN: “NOT SUSPICIOUS!”

On average, 3 foreigners are killed in New Zealand every 4 days.

The British tourist was the 2,419th foreigner to be murdered/killed/found dead in ‘nonsuspicious circumstances’ in New Zealand since January 2000.

Another Japanese Tourist Killed in New Zealand

Posted by te2ataria on January 29, 2012

Japanese visitor fell to his death at Milford Track in Fiordland

As usual, the police are blaming the death on the visitor instead of the tourist deathtrap, saying the victim “appeared to have suffered a heart attack after falling,” which means the massive fall didn’t kill him!!

Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes of Invercargill police said arrangements were being made to winch out the victim’s body by helicopter because  it was in an  awkward part of the track.

He added that the death would be referred to the coroner, but didn’t specify how he came to the conclusion about his prognosis.

It’s not known whether the policeman has any medical experience, or that he ever worked as a coroner himself.

On average, 3 foreigners are killed in New Zealand every 4 days.

The Japanese tourist was the 2,401th foreigner to be murdered/ killed in New Zealand since January 2000.

More Chinese visitors killed on NZ Roads

Posted by te2ataria on January 13, 2012

God knows how many more, but the general view must be there are “too many” of them to worry about a few (!)

At least 4 more people were killed on South Island roads in less than a day.

Police have revealed only three of the fatal crashes on South Island roads in less than one day.

In the first of the three reported fatal crashes, two people believed to be Chinese and Taiwanese nationals were killed on State Highway 6 near Cromwell and two others were critically injured.

[NZ media do NOT follow up on the fate of victims that are critically injured in car crashes.]

The first victim was the driver of the sedan, a 29-year-old believed to be a Chinese national, who had been working in the Cromwell area, died at the scene.

The second victim was one of the passengers travelling in the same car who received critical injuries and was rushed to Dunedin Hospital. She died shortly after the collision in Cromwell, Central Otago, last night. She too is believed to be a Chinese national.

A witness to the a crash described the scene as “carnage”. Emergency services were called to the corner of State Highway 6 and State Highway 8B, on the outskirts of Cromwell, about 5.45pm after a sedan and courier van collided.

The driver of the sedan, a 29-year-old who had been working in the Cromwell area, died at the scene, while other occupants suffered critical and serious injuries.

“It didn’t look good; the car is not in a good way,” the witness said.

Ambulance Communications spokespeople said three helicopters were called to the scene, two from Dunedin and one from Queenstown, and were used to transport three people to Dunedin Hospital.

The other passenger was taken by ambulance to Dunstan Hospital, and the driver of the van had minor injuries.

“It is extremely serious,” an ambulance spokeswoman said.

Cromwell chief fire officer Steve Shaw said the sedan had its roof cut off because one person was trapped.

It appeared the van T-boned the sedan and the number of people seriously injured inside made it difficult for emergency services, he said.

“It was hard for the guys, but they did a fantastic job,” he said.

It is understood at least two of the car’s occupants were Chinese.

Shaw said crashes were common at that intersection and it needed to be reviewed.

“Because you are pulling across a main road, you just have to look. You have to be pretty attentive there,” he said.

Friends of the victims, also from China, who arrived at the scene after the crash said the people travelling in the car had been living in New Zealand and working at an orchard nearby. […]

[Crash No. 2] A truck driver died when his truck rolled north of Christchurch today, the third fatal crash on South Island roads in a day.

[Crash No. 3] This morning, a person died and another was injured after a car crashed into a power pole near Tussock Creek in Southland.       http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/6250530/Carnage-on-South-Island-roads

The two tourists/seasonal workers were the 2,326th – 2,327th foreigners to be murdered/ killed in New Zealand since January 2000.
