24 year old female visitor killed in Mount Aspiring fall

Fatal fall at Wanaka – Wednesday, 9 December 2015 – 6:10pm – Southern police

A 24 year old woman was killed in a fall at Mount Aspiring National Park [one of New Zealand’s Top Ten Tourist Deathtraps.]

The victim and her climbing partner were on a four-day trek based out of Makarora and were negotiating the Matukituki Waterfall face near Rabbit Pass when the fatal fall occurred, police said.

Another foreign student killed in New Zealand

English tourist lasted only 10 hours in New Zealand

More overseas visitors, international students, foreign workers and new immigrants are killed, or injured in New Zealand than in rest of the “developed” world combined.

English tourist survived Australian holiday, only to be killed in New Zealand

David Banks was “road-murdered” in a two-car collision near State Highway 1, near Oakleigh, about 2pm on Wednesday.

Mr Banks and his wife had flown from Australia and arrived in Auckland about 4am on Wednesday, and were on their way to the Bay of Islands, said Sergeant Simon Craig.

“They had been in Australia for 10 days, they had family there and had planned to tour New Zealand for six weeks. The wife is absolutely distraught, they have no family in New Zealand,” he said.

“The couple’s rental car collided with a southbound vehicle occupied by three people, all from Auckland. Both Mr Banks and the driver of the southbound vehicle were cut from the vehicles by firefighters,” according to a report. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11540602

Fatal crash on State Highway One in Whangarei
Fatal crash causes delays on State Highway One in Whangarei. One person is dead and another four are in hospital after a head-on crash in Northland, which has caused delays on State Highway One. The two-car smash happened at Oakleigh, south of Whangarei at 2pm. A Whangarei police spokeswoman confirmed one person had died (English tourist, see above). Turkish tourist injured in ‘senseless’ bashing in New Brighton
Police have arrested three teenagers they believe befriended, then bashed, a Turkish tourist before stealing his phone and wallet. A former Nelson man who died after crashing his car off a bridge and into a stream in the Coromandel “left an imprint on many people’s lives”, his sister says. Police are investigating an incident in Kamo this afternoon in which a person died after a ride on mower rolled into a creek. Emergency services were called at about 2:45 pm to Three Mile Bush Road in Kamo where a person was reported to be trapped under a mower.

Andrew Wyatt was alive and well when he arrived in NZ

Body found in Nelson Lakes National Park believed to be that of English tourist Andrew Wyatt

Searchers looking for British tramper Andrew Wyatt have recovered a body in Nelson Lakes National Park, believed to be the missing tramper.

The body is yet to be formally identified, police said.

The body was found at the foot of a 100 metre precipice below the Lake Constance Bluff, which was the 41-year-old’s intended route. He had been missing for 12 days.

Mr Wyatt, from Cornwall, arrived in New Zealand on November 21 and was last seen on December 15 at Blue Lake Hut.

Mr Wyatt had intended to walk the 3,000-kilometre (1,900-mile) Te Araroa Trail, yet another tourist deathtrap, which runs along the entire length of the New Zealand, when he went missing.

Q. What do an Aussie swimmer, a Chinese granny and an English biker have in common?

A. They all were among an undisclosed number of tourists killed in New Zealand recently!

Aussie tourist Mathew Slade, 21, drowned after going for a swim with friends in the Waikato River, near Taupo, on Wednesday evening. His body was recovered at 2.15pm on Thursday, police said.

Mathew Slade had been camping at the nearby National Equestrian Centre, and was preparing for a competition in New Zealand in March, according to a report.

Chinese national Rongmei Wang, 71, was killed in Hamilton on Christmas Day, while several others were in Southland and Taumarunui on Boxing Day and in Oamaru.

The man who was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck on SH6 between Nelson and Rai Valley was Allan Ford, aged 73 years, from Horsham, West Sussex in the UK, police said. “Mr Ford was holidaying in New Zealand for several weeks. He was riding with four other motorcyclists when the accident happened.”

Police have named the German tourist who was killed in Mount Aspiring as 38-year-old Frank Spychalski.

Frank Spychalski, 38, was killed in Mount Aspiring National Park in South Westland when he fell 200 metres from a ridge, police said.  His last entry on google diary dated November 27, 2012  read: “Back on the Te Araroa and moving faster than ever.  Rented a MTB for today (well, an old wrack that hasn’t seen maintenance in years) and per chance picked a trail that’s part of the TA. Somehow NZ feels like a huge outdoor entertainment pack.”

On Google site, Spychalski has been described as an “espresso addict, software engineer & outdoor geek”.

The dead man worked for Google in Munich, Germany.

His  body was found in Mount Aspiring National Park in South Westland where he fell 200 metres from a ridge, police said.

Yet another feather in Google’s news censorship cap!

World’s busiest tourist deathtrap claims two more lives

Update- 6 December 2012: The media have now reported that one of the two tourists killed near Pelorus Bridge was French and the other a German national. Moderator D.H.

Two more tourists were killed this afternoon in a head-on collision near Pelorus Bridge in Marlborough. The two victims are believed to be Americans, according to an unconfirmed report.

Two others, both female, were taken to Wairau Hospital with serious head and spinal injuries.

The crash occurred between a vehicle and an ute about 1pm on the Nelson side of Pelorus Bridge, according to a report.

The report did not state the fate of the occupants of a third vehicle, if any, shown in the photo:

Italian tourist skydiving in NZ hits the ground at terminal velocity

Antonino Arillotta, 38, hit the ground at speeds of greater than 120MPH and was most probably killed instantly when both his main and reserve parachutes failed to open on a skydiving flight Thursday afternoon, local police said.

The victim, who had been in New Zealand only a few weeks, was filming a commercial tandem jump in Wanaka when his NZ death clock stopped ticking.

Mr Arillotta was an experienced skydiver who had carried out almost 4000 jumps, according to a report.

Another Australian woman killed in NZ tourist deathtrap

Melbourne woman Chelsea Callaghan died at the weekend having suffered severe head injuries while on a quad bike adventure tour less than two weeks ago.

Ms Callaghan, 38, who had signed up for a tour with “quad-bike specialist” Riverland Adventures, sustained her injuries at Klondyke Rd, in Onewhero, just outside Auckland, on October 11, according to a report.

“Her death is the fifth quad bike-related death this year and follows that of 10-year-old Sam White on October 10,” the report said.

According to data from Ministry of Innovation & Employment, formerly the Department of Labour, 850 people are injured riding quad bikes on farms every year and five die.

January: Peter Rouse, 74, died on a Tokomaru Bay farm.

Italian ski instructor killed in New Zealand

Italian ski instructor to go home in a body bag

Elias Hofer, 25, an Italian ski instructor, was found dead on Sunday near the head of the Wairere Stream east of the Pinnacles. His body was transferred to Waikato Hospital for an autopsy, according to a report.

The victim worked for Ruapehu Alpine Lifts.

Christopher Robin Jones, 22, was stabbed to death in Hastings on Saturday. Some media reported that Jones was an American, while other media have disputed his nationality.

A mother and her three-month-old child were killed after falling from 26th floor of an Auckland apartment block, according to a report.

The mother, 36,  an her baby were Mexican visitors who had been in the country only a couple of weeks, the report said.

The “Auckland Harbour Oaks Hotel and Apartments” is said to be tallest apartment tower in New Zealand, with 38 floors of “apartment style hotel accommodation”.  The building is located on Gore St in Auckland’s CBD.

The Mexican visitor and her baby were probably the 2,561st and 2,562nd visitors killed in New Zealand since January 2000.

Another Woman Killed in Collision

Meanwhile, another woman, also believed to be a tourist, was killed after  the car in which she was travelling collided with a truck. Another woman and two children, believed to be aged 12 and 18 months, were taken to Middlemore Hospital with moderate to serious injuries, according to a report.

Husband killed, woman remains critical

Newly wed U.S. woman whose husband was killed in a crash by the Waitomo Caves remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital.

The American couple, married just five days ago in the US, were on their honeymoon when their car was rammed by a cement truck on Thursday.

The bridegroom, 31-year-old Kenneth Stithem, was killed in the crash and his 28-year-old wife Kirsten Steinke is in critical condition, awaiting surgery.

Her parents, who traveled from Colorado, are at their daughter’s bedside, according to Newstalk ZB.

The Air New Zealand “Bereavement Service”

So many tourists are killed in New Zealand that our national air carrier, Air New Z-land is now offering a special “bereavement service” for the victims’ families.

“They also singled out the service provided by Air New Zealand as part of their bereavement policy. From the moment both couples checked in at Los Angeles International Airport, Air New Zealand ensured they were “red tagged” right through to Auckland Airport and fast-tracked through Customs with the help of the New Zealand Police,” according to a report.

NZ foreign victim 2,482 murdered in Canterbury

Czech tourist murdered in a South Canterbury forestry block

The female body found in a  South Canterbury forestry block is that of 31-year-old Czech tourist, Dagmar Pytlickova, also known as Dasha, police said.


Czech tourist Dagmar Pytlickova, 31, was the 2,482nd foreigner to be murdered/killed in New Zealand since January 2000.

“Formal identification has yet to be completed but we are confident it is Dasha,” an investigating policeman said.

A second body found nearby in the forestry area was identified as missing Waimate man Jason Frandi, a 43-year-old convicted sex offender, police added.

Police told media on Tuesday afternoon it was likely Ms Pytlickova had been abducted and driven to a remote area where Mr Frandi attempted to have sex with her and then a struggle followed, according to NZ Newswire.

However,  police has not revealed how or why Jason Frandi was killed. Was it suicide? Were  other parties  involved?

Woman Killed in Head-on Collision

A woman was killed in a two car collision on SH1 near Dunedin International Airport yesterday afternoon, but her identity has NOT yet been released.

“The crash, which is thought to have occurred around 1pm, happened about 5km south of the Allanton turn-off to Dunedin International Airport on State Highway One, at the northern entrance to the Taieri River Bridge,” the police said.

The female driver of a southbound car was killed in the crash.

If the victim was an overseas visitor, she would be the 2,424th foreigners killed in New Zealand since January 2000.

Australian Climber Killed in NZ Fiordland

Australian-Based Visitor Killed Climbing Homer Saddle, Fiordland National Park

Athol Whimp, 50, fell more than 800 meters to his death while climbing the Homer Saddle in Fiordland National Park on Thursday, February 23, 2012, police said.

Whimp was an experienced and well-regarded mountain climber who had been holidaying in New Zealand, Sergeant Ian Martin, of Invercargill police said.

The victim’s body was  taken to Southland Hospital in Invercargill for an autopsy.

“Quake-hit Christchurch has become the destination of choice for holiday-makers wanting to experience the earth moving,” claims FairFacts.

“Motel Association Christchurch branch president Mike Brown said he had heard anecdotal reports of people being attracted to the city by the prospect of experiencing a quake, but the visitors he met were wary of the quakes and shocked by how damaging they could be,” according to a report.
