This is actually only the tip of the iceberg. My local paper is not searchable online, and just glancing at Thursday’s edition, I notice a stick-up of a tourist at the supermarket parking lot. They ripped his shirt off and punched him when he said he had no money. Another attack occurred elsewhere in town, man knocked to ground and kicked, cellphone and wallet taken. One vehicle stolen, one house burgled, one assault, one attempted burglary at a motel, one drunken driving incident causing a multiple car crash, one shop window smashed. In a tourist town of several thousand people. The New Zealand National Survey of Crime Victims cited an incidence of crime that was “twice the figure in the police reports”. I think people weigh the amount of nuisance it will cause them for no outcome and decide not to report. How can the statistics be “showing that crime is dropping”? Could it be wishful thinking? A redesign of crime categories?

Drugs and crime is New Zealand’s wide spread culture and anyone coming to New Zealand as a tourist to enjoy it’s natural beauty should be aware that a large number of kiwis are either criminals or criminally minded. They may easily assault you, engage in altrications with you, force to you smoke dope or expell you from your employment (do “numbers on you”), call you a nark, hate you for being a foreigner, hate you for being educated (most of their tradies are not and have not even finished school, but you will probably need to work with them).
Many employers support this attitude and it even got worse with National Party being in power as it’s sends them messages this country is for kiwis only, or at least they read it that way.
If you rent an accomodation in New Zealand it is advisable that you install a motion detector video-surveilance camera (availabe from Jay-Car Electronics for around 115 dollars) to make sure they don’t break into your flat or apartment to steal your nickers, socks… Anything suspicious – COMPLAIN TO POLICE, don’t be scared.
Honestly, having have lived here for a good part of my life, I just avoid this scum alltogether, and you can easily tell who is scum and who is not. When I first started work in Wellington, there was an emergency services vehicle parked every morning at 6am opposite Beehive (NZ Parliament) and a samoan heritage female driver was smoking joints there watchihg politicians to go to work and laughing at them.
Helen Clark was in power at that time and I witnessed it all, in a Wellington suburb of Kilbirnie, there used to be a “tinnie house” just next door to the Community Policing Centre and I cannot image cops did not know about it…
If this happens in Wellington, THE CAPITAL, you can imagine what goes on in small distant towns of New Zealand, where drunken riots and just everyday violence and crime are usual.
It is honestly quite scary to live here at times!
Best advise – watch you own safety, be extremely careful, esspecially in pubs, and AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!

‘Terrifying ordeal’: Homeowner robbed by four people with gun, hammer

A person has been left terrified after being robbed in their own home in the middle of the night by armed thieves.
The Carterton resident was woken at 1.30am on Saturday to a knock at the door, Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth said.
“The homeowner got up and was confronted in the hallway by four people. One was brandishing a long-barrelled firearm and another was holding a hammer.”
The intruders had demanded property and cash before searching the house and stealing personal items.
“The homeowner has experienced a terrifying ordeal and while not physically harmed, has been left extremely shaken.”
