HIV cases in NZ jumped 9% in 2016

“In 2016, 244 people (217 men, 27 women) were first known to be infected with HIV in New Zealand, 118 through Western Blot antibody testing and 126 through viral load testing. Of these 244, 30 had been previously diagnosed overseas.

“Of the 244, 159 were men who have sex with men (MSM), 5 men were infected through either sex with another man or injecting drug use, 42 people (22 men, 20 women) were infected through heterosexual contact, and one person was infected by injecting drug use (IDU). For the remaining 37 people (30 men, 7 women) the means of infection was unknown or information is still to be received.

“The total number of diagnoses in 2016 (244) was higher than in 2015 (224). Among MSM the number diagnosed rose from 136 in 2014, 153 in 2015, to 159 in 2016. However, the number diagnosed each year will not be the same as the number infected, as people may be infected a number of years before being diagnosed.”

“Overall 23 people (20 men, 3 women) were notified with AIDS in 2016, compared to nine people in 2015. Of the 23, 16 (70%) were MSM, 4 (17%) were infected heterosexually, 2 men (9%) were infected by either sex with another man or injecting drug use, and for one person (4%) the means of transmission was not reported.

“Twelve (52%) were of European ethnicity, 4 (18%) Māori, 6 (26%) Asian, and 1 (4%) Pacific Islander. Sixteen people had their AIDS diagnosis within three months of being diagnosed

with HIV and would probably not have had the opportunity for antiretroviral treatment to control progression of their HIV infection.”

[Only] one in three women and one in five men have had chlamydia by the age of 38, a study estimates, according to a recent study, known as “The Dunedin Study“, by the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine at the Dunedin School of Medicine.

The study lead author, Dr Antoinette Righarts, concedes, however, the rate of infection could be higher among younger people, who were born more recently than the study group.

Longer jail sentence for smoking, than for murdering a neighbour in NZ

IF only the military taught them common sense and respect for the rules…

Former soldier jailed for smoking on flight from UK to Egypt has sentence doubled to almost TEN YEARS.

UK Court of appeal had ruled John Cox’s original sentence was unduly lenient after he started a blaze in a toilet bin on a Monarch Airlines flight from Birmingham to Sharm el-Sheikh in 2015, said a report.

John Cox, 46, was initially sentenced to four-and-a-half years after admitting committing arson during a Monarch flight from Birmingham to Sharm el-Sheikh in 2015.

“To throw a cigarette butt into a wastepaper bin without ensuring it is extinguished would show a high degree of recklessness,” the judge said.

“On an aircraft at 33,000 ft, the conduct comes perilously close to deliberate fire-setting.”

Christchurch dairy robbed 9 times in 7 months

“The fastest growing crime in the country”

More armed robberies occurring in New Zealand than in…, well, any other country we hear about.

The Indian co-owner of a dairy in Woolston, Christchurch that has been robbed nine times in the last seven months says employees are now too scared to work at night.

In March RNZ reported a Night n’ Day store 160m away had been robbed eight times in seven months.

Meanwhile, police claim they are investigating whether three ram raid burglaries in three weeks in Christchurch are linked.

“Thieves reversed a stolen car through the doors of Henry’s liquor store on Yaldhurst Rd at 2.20am on Monday, making off with an unknown amount of alcohol and causing extensive damage to the store.

“It was the third early-morning ram raid burglary in as many weeks. On May 14, a car was reversed into Jemmett’s Power Tool Service in Hornby and thousands of dollars of tools were taken. Less than 24 hours later, a car yanked the doors off Peaches & Cream on Colombo St on May 15 and cash was taken.”

Re-selling Stolen Cigarettes?

Counties Manukau Area Commander Dave Glossover said, “active investigations” were under way into several dairies suspected of re-selling stolen tobacco, which he called the fastest growing crime in the country.

“Some of the dairy owners we deal with are saying they have been offered cigarettes,” he said.

Residents in Waverley told to boil water

Water supply in the South Taranaki town of Waverley has proved positive for E-coli bacteria and residents have been told to boil water.

“Routine tests have detected the bacteria Escherichia coli in the Waverley Water Supply, and investigations are now underway to find the source,” said South Taranaki District Council.

“Residents are advised to boil all water used for drinking, brushing teeth or for food preparation until further notice.”

“Bringing water to the boil is enough to kill all bugs (however, we recommend boiling water for about 1 minute).”

“Anyone showing symptoms of sickness should visit their doctor as soon as possible,” the official statement said.

Only in New Zealand: Fairy Tale Ending for Teenage Murderer

Indian dairy owner’s teenage killer paroled and sent back to school

A teenager who stabbed and killed an Indian dairy worker in West Auckland has been released from a youth justice facility.

Arun Kumar, 57, was killed in June 2014 after being stabbed by a then-14-year-old and his 12-year-old friend.

The teenager, who was granted permanent name suppression in High Court, was found guilty of Kumar’s manslaughter [NOT murder, of course] and jailed for six years, but later released on appeal.

Just Like That!

The racist, shameful, frigging judges in the “Court of Appeal ruled the sentencing judge failed to take into full consideration the effects a traumatic brain injury had on his behaviour on the day of Kumar’s death.”

If the teenage murderer had a brain injury, why wasn’t  he kept under some kind of supervision?

Why is he now set free and sent back to school, where he can kill again?

How wealthy/ well-connected  is his family?

Why did the court fail to take into account the victim’s right to live?

Wasn’t Arun Kumar conveniently eliminated from the “justice” equation because he was an Indian, and therefore expendable?

“What did I do wrong? Why do you have kill so many Indians in New Zealand with impunity?” Slain Henderson dairy owner Arun Kumar, 57. Photo: supplied/via stuff NZ

Myrtle rust spreads to new region

A positive detection of myrtle rust has been made in the Waikato region.

The fungal plant disease was identified in a small number of plants at a nursery in Te Kuiti. The new location was found as a result of MPI tracing sales of plants from another positive nursery.

MPI has personnel on the ground in Te Kuiti and restrictions are in place on the movement of risk goods from the property. The property will be treated with fungicide.

As with all other finds to date, MPI will continue to search surrounding areas for signs of the fungus.

This new find, along with a further 3 properties in Taranaki, brings the total number of confirmed infected properties to 16 nationally.

The majority of properties are in Taranaki with just 2 confirmed in Northland and the one new Waikato find.  http://www.mpi.govt.nz/news-and-resources/media-releases/myrtle-rust-find-in-new-region/

Myrtle rust: Number of infected properties rises to 12  — [Bad Karma]

Myrtle rust is a serious fungal disease that affects plants in the myrtle family. Plants in this family include pōhutukawa and mānuka. The first detection of the disease in mainland New Zealand was at a Northland nursery in early May 2017. The disease is likely to affect some of our iconic native plants as well as commercially-grown species.  [MPI]

Myrtle rust has been found in Kerikeri in Northland and in Waitara, Taranaki. It is also widespread on Raoul Island in the Kermadec group, about 1,100km to the north-east of New Zealand. Myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii) is also known as guava rust and eucalyptus rust. The fungus attacks various species of plants in the Myrtaceae family, also known as the myrtle family. It is found in many parts of the world including New Caledonia and all along Australia’s eastern seaboard. Myrtle rust spores are microscopic and can easily spread across large distances by wind, or via insects, birds, people, or machinery. Source: info@mpi.govt.nz

Myrtle rust fond on at least 12 properties

“Four further Taranaki properties have tested positive for myrtle rust, bringing the number of positive locations nationally to 12.

“At this time, the disease has only been recorded in 2 regions – Northland and Taranaki. 8 of the affected properties are plant nurseries or retailers/distributors, and it has been detected in four private gardens.

“This response is rapidly changing as large numbers of members of the public report through suspected finds. To date, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has received some 380 reports of suspected symptoms through its 0800 number and the number of affected properties is expected to grow.”  http://www.mpi.govt.nz/news-and-resources/media-releases/myrtle-rust-response-media-update-22-may-2017/

Name one country where a truck crash can cut off Internet access for 5,000

It’s New Zealand, of course!!

Only in NZ: Truck crash on SH63 closes bridge, cuts internet to thousands

A truck jack-knifed into the side of Wye River bridge, on SH63, reportedly damaging a fibre-optic cable, cutting internet access to at least 5,000 households in the Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman regions, and leaving the driver seriously/critically injured.

A truck crash that cut internet to thousands of homes has left a bridge on the alternative highway out of action, forcing traffic into the river to keep the post-quake route open.

The crash happened about 5.45am on Sunday when a truck driver drove into the side of the single-lane Wye River bridge, between Renwick and St Arnaud on State Highway 63.

Since the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake last November, traffic on SH63 has increased more than five-fold with millions of dollars being spent to help support the extra load.

Lead has lowered your IQ, and E. coli could kill you!

Once again, who needs clean water in New Zealand??

Raised levels of lead found in five Dunedin primary schools

The Southern District Health Board say they are investigating raised levels of lead in five Dunedin primary schools: Bathgate Park, George Street Normal, Mornington, North East Valley and Opoho, a report said.

“Medical officer of health Marian Poore said the highest sample level was 595mg of lead per kg of soil, which is above the recommended government standard for home gardens (210mg) but below [the totally arbitrary level set] for public parks (880mg).”

Principals’ Federation criticise delay on reporting lead levels

The Principals’ Federation say they are alarmed the health authorities have taken about 16 months before telling schools that soil on school grounds are contaminated with raised levels of lead.

“Bathgate Park was one of the schools affected, and principal Whetu Cormack told Morning Report he was only told by the Ministry of Education about the results yesterday,” a report said.

Lead exposure destroys your life
“Children with elevated blood-lead levels at age 11 ended up as adults with lower cognitive function and lower-status occupations than their parents…”

“The findings, published [in March] in JAMA, were based on a study that followed about 1,000 children born in the early 1970s in the coastal city of Dunedin, New Zealand. More than half were tested for lead in 1983, and nearly three decades later, those who’d had higher blood-lead levels as children were more likely to have lower IQs and to wind up lower on the socioeconomic ladder. Both associations remained even after researchers accounted for the children’s IQs, their mothers’ IQs and their social-class backgrounds.”

The dairy industry gives a new meaning to Golden Bay
“While monitoring water quality at Te Waikoropupū Springs Friends of Golden Bay noticed that where Fish Creek flows into the Springs reserve it repeatedly had an unpleasant appearance and smell after rain events.”

“Bearing in mind the recent outbreak of illness in Hawke’s Bay, we initially tested for both Campylobacter and E.coli. We took samples during rain events when the problem was evident. We are glad to report no Campylobacter was found. However, the picture with E.coli is a different matter. We present the results in the table below,” say Friends of Golden Bay.

E-coli levels from farm runoff under rain events will always be high and exceed drinking and swimming water standards.” and “It is common to get between 1,000-10,000 E.coli/100ml, depending on the density of cows and timing of when the cows were last in the paddock. It is like where we were at with dairy shed effluent 20 years ago.”

NZ police unwilling to protect Indian businesses

Auckland dairy and liquor store owners say they are considering a mass hunger strike to “press the government into action,” after yet another violent robbery landed a man in hospital.

In the latest incident of aggravated robbery in Mangere on Tuesday, a man suffered extensive facial and head injuries, said a report.

Four masked men stormed an Indian-owned shop and attacked Vikas Singh who works there.

“They just jumped on him, and they just hit him on the head,” said owner Kamiljit Singh.

“They punched him, kicked him, then another guy came in, the big guy put a machete on his neck, holding him, then he kicked him again and dropped him on the ground.”

The robbers stole a “small amount” of cigarettes before fleeing on foot. Vikas Singh was hospitalized due to the extent of his injuries.
