Residents in Waverley told to boil water

Water supply in the South Taranaki town of Waverley has proved positive for E-coli bacteria and residents have been told to boil water.

“Routine tests have detected the bacteria Escherichia coli in the Waverley Water Supply, and investigations are now underway to find the source,” said South Taranaki District Council.

“Residents are advised to boil all water used for drinking, brushing teeth or for food preparation until further notice.”

“Bringing water to the boil is enough to kill all bugs (however, we recommend boiling water for about 1 minute).”

“Anyone showing symptoms of sickness should visit their doctor as soon as possible,” the official statement said.

South Taranaki District [population of 28,000] is located on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island and contains the towns of Hawera, Manaia, Opunake, Patea, Eltham, and Waverley.
