NZ River Quality: Faecal Matter Abound

“Two out of three rivers being monitored in New Zealand have enough faecal bacteria to make people sick – and the situation is not improving,” a report cited new data.

Land Air and Water Aotearoa (LAWA) released its latest river water quality national picture summary earlier, providing updated results for 1500 river testing sites across New Zealand.

Publish date: 26 September 2021

LAWA shows water quality information for river sites throughout New Zealand. Rivers and streams are monitored for a range of water quality (chemical-physical and bacterial) and ecological indicators by regional councils and unitary authorities, and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). Data and information is now available from more than 1500 river sites, up from 1100 sites seven years ago when LAWA was initiated. State and trends for these indicators have been updated using data up to the end of December 2020.

This national picture summary focuses on the state of our rivers and streams. Here we report on:

1) A biological indicator of ecosystem health (Macroinvertebrate Community Index – MCI)

2) An indicator bacterium that can indicate faecal contamination and the presence of harmful pathogens which may cause illness to recreational water users (E. coli)

3) Nutrients that can be toxic to in-stream life (ammonia and nitrate toxicity)

4) A key nutrient that can lead to problematic in-stream algal growth (dissolved reactive phosphorus – DRP)

5) Suspended fine sediment that can affect the ecosystem health and amenity value of waterways (clarity)

This summary provides information on the state of river health in New Zealand, how it varies by land cover, and how it has changed over time. As data are only available for sites where monitoring has been conducted, and monitoring sites are often located in areas at greater risk of degradation from human activities, this summary is not necessarily a balanced representation of all rivers and streams across the country.

Zhang left her Mt Albert (Auckland) home going for a walk about 6am on Wednesday, but failed to return and was reported missing by her family just before 1pm, police said.

Her violated body was discovered later that afternoon.

Lauren Dickason, 40, was charged with triple murder on Friday. She appeared in the Timaru District Court on Saturday and was remanded to Hillmorton Hospital, Christchurch, for a psychiatric assessment to reappear in the High Court in Timaru on October 5, the report said.

Cognitive Dissonance

In the field of psychology, cognitive dissonance is the perception of contradictory information. Relevant items of information include a person’s actions, feelings, ideas, beliefs, and values, and things in the environment. Cognitive dissonance is typically experienced as psychological stress when they participate in an action that goes against one or more of them. According to this theory, when two actions or ideas are not psychologically consistent with each other, people do all in their power to change them until they become consistent. The discomfort is triggered by the person’s belief clashing with new information perceived, wherein they try to find a way to resolve the contradiction to reduce their discomfort.

Example: Why Trump supporters believe they were robbed?

A brain’s built-in biases can insulate beliefs from contradictory facts – and for some people, no amount of concrete evidence [i.e, laws of physics relating to 9/11 attacks] will change their minds.

“This relationship between beliefs and self-concept can be reinforced by affiliations with groups like political parties, cults or other like-minded thinkers.”

“These groups are often belief bubbles where the majority of members believe the same thing and repeat these beliefs to one another, strengthening the idea that their beliefs are right.”

“Researchers have found that people generally think they are more knowledgeable about certain issues than they really are.”

“These ideas then get passed from person to person without being based on fact. For example, 70 per cent of Republicans say they don’t believe the 2020 presidential election was free and fair despite a lack of any evidence of widespread voter fraud.

“Belief bubbles and the defenses against cognitive dissonance can be hard to break down. And they can have important downstream effects.

“For instance, these psychological mechanisms affect the ways people have chosen whether or not to follow public health guidelines around social distancing and wearing masks during the Covid-19 pandemic, sometimes with deadly consequences.”

State of Insecurity: The Cost of Militarization Since 9/11

Twenty years after 9/11, the war on terror has remade the U.S. into a far more militarized actor, both around the world and at home. The human costs of this evolution are many — including mass incarceration, widespread surveillance, the violent repression of immigrant communities, and hundreds of thousands of lives lost to war and violence.

But of course, this militarization also has financial costs too. Over 20 years, the U.S. has spent more than $21 trillion on militarization, surveillance, and repression — all in the name of security. These investments have shown us that the U.S. has the capacity and political will to invest in our biggest priorities.

But the COVID-19 pandemic, the January 6 Capitol insurrection, wildfires raging in the West, and even the fall of Afghanistan have shown us that these investments cannot buy us safety. The next 20 years present an opportunity to reconsider where we need to reinvest for a better future.

KEY FINDINGS

– Over the 20 years since 9/11, the U.S. has spent $21 trillion on foreign and domestic militarization.
– Of that total, $16 trillion went to the military — including at least $7.2 trillion for military contracts.
– Another $3 trillion went to veterans’ programs, $949 billion went to Homeland Security, and $732 billion went to federal law enforcement.
– For far less than it spent on militarization since 9/11, the U.S. could reinvest to meet critical challenges that have been neglected for the last 20 years:
+ $4.5 trillion could fully decarbonize the U.S. electric grid.
+ $2.3 trillion could create 5 million jobs at $15 per hour with benefits and cost-of-living adjustments for 10 years.
+ $1.7 trillion could erase student debt.
$449 billion could continue the extended Child Tax Credit for another 10 years.
+ $200 billion could guarantee free preschool for every 3-and-4-year old for 10 years, and raise teacher pay.
+ $25 billion could provide COVID vaccines for the populations of low-income countries.
