Cost of sexual promiscuity: ‘Rising cases of syphilis tip of the iceberg’

“A sexual health doctor says a rising number of reported cases of infectious syphilis in this country is likely to be the tip of the iceberg.”

Dr Jane Morgan from the Hamilton Sexual Health Team said 400 cases of syphilis were voluntarily reported by sexual health clinics throughout the country, up from only 80 reported cases in 2012.

However, there were a lot of other cases that are not being reported, Morgan said.

“She said that even though reporting of syphilis cases was now mandatory, the Ministry of Health was yet to get a system in place to collect the data.” [So what’s new?]

Cyclone Gita continues battering New Zealand

Thousands of people still trapped in Golden Bay

Thousands of residents and tourists are trapped in Golden Bay and Collingwood have been cut off as State Highway 60, the only way out of the area, has closed in several places due to rain caused slips.

Dozens of other roads and “state highways” have been closed including SH73 near Kumara, SH1 in Kaikōura, north and south, due to flooding, slips and major damage. SH6 has also been closed between Westport and Greymouth due to flooding.

A 60-metre section of SH1 between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay was destroyed after being undermined by sea swells from ex-Cyclone Gita.

Hundreds of schools and early learning centres remain closed throughout Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Waikato, Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu and Otago, as lingering thunderstorms over the west coast of the South Island are expected to move on to Wellington.

Thousands of residents in Nelson, Tasman, Canterbury… have also been evacuated.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of homes in Tasman and Taranki are without power and multiple states of emergency have been declared…

There are reports of localised “flooding in Motueka, Takaka and Marahau, significant flooding in the Riwaka Plains.”

Milk, bread, canned goods, candles, bottled water and toilet paper “as well as other essentials have been cleared out of Takaka as the Tasman town is cut off and trucks with supplies are unable to reach them for days.”

Total cost of damage caused by Gita could exceed $300 million, informed sources have told the blog.

“The mass death of eels in a coastal Taranaki stream is being blamed on poor land management and the effects of climate change,” a report said.

“People in Nelson are being warned not to swim or take shellfish at local beaches that could be polluted by untreated sewage.”

“Nelson City Council said yesterday’s heavy rain has caused an overflow of untreated sewage and stormwater contaminants into Nelson Haven and Waimea Estuary.”

“Nelson was hit by bad weather earlier this month when ex-tropical storm Fehi and king tides caused storm surges that badly damaged buildings along its waterfront.”

Homes and campsites in low-lying areas have been evacuated.  Failure at Richmond’s pump station caused sewerage overflows into Monaco, Nelson Haven and Waimea Estuary, the report said.

Two of teens killed from a group of five swimming at the Cascade Falls area in the Waitakere ranges have been named. They were Mitch Woolley, a 17 year old from Waitakere, and  Sosi Turagaiviu, also 17, who lived in Massey.

Sunday, 4 February 2018 – 5:28pm – Eastern
A fatal crash occurred on Middle Road, Otane.
Two motorcycles were involved in the crash and one collided with a truck, killing the rider. “Another person has been taken to Hawke’s Bay Hospital in a serious condition.”

89. Fatal crash in Te Kuiti
One person was killed after a car rolled on Oparure Road, between Boddie Road and Gadsby Road, west of Te Kuiti at 4:18am this morning.
“The driver was trapped in the vehicle but unfortunately died at the scene. Three others in the car were taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance – two in a serious condition, and one in moderate condition.”

Hauraki Plains crash victim was young mother-to-be
19-year-old Kelsey Runga of Rotorua was the woman who was killed in a crash on State Highway Two at Waikino, Hauraki on Friday night around 9pm, police said.

Kelsey was believed to be due to give birth in May, a report said.
Two other people were injured in the crash, one critically, the other seriously.
